Mangaluru, Oct 14: The Institute of Aviation Studies, Srinivas University, organized an industrial visit to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Mangaluru International Airport from October 8 to 13. The hands-on training programme was conducted for final-year BBA aviation management and aviation, travel and tourism management students, focusing on air traffic control and Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) systems. The industrial visit was held under the guidance of Dr Pavithra Kumari, dean, Institute of Aviation Studies, Anjana TV, head of the department, and Deepa K Shetty industrial visit coordinator.






Throughout the training sessions, students were given the opportunity to gain in-depth exposure to real-time airport and air traffic operations. The programme featured expert-led interactive sessions conducted by industry professionals. Mohith, Assistant Manager (ATC), delivered insightful sessions on air traffic services and management, covering key aspects such as aircraft separation, communication protocols, runway markings, handling emergencies, and emerging trends in ATC. Jyothi, Manager (ADM), highlighted the pivotal role of air traffic controllers as the “eyes of the pilot”, emphasizing their responsibility in ensuring flight safety and coordination. Additionally, Anil Kumar M R, deputy general manager (CNS), presented a detailed overview of CNS systems and ATC infrastructure, elaborating on radar operations, ADS-B technology, automation centres, and providing a live demonstration of aircraft tracking systems.
As part of the hands-on learning, students were taken on a guided tour of key operational areas, including radar systems, the anti-hijacking control room, the automation room, and the Area Control Centre. They observed multiple arrival and departure flight movements, gaining valuable first-hand experience in air traffic monitoring, coordination, and control procedures.
The industrial visit served as an effective bridge between academic learning and real-world application, enhancing students’ understanding of the operational complexities and technological advancements in modern air traffic management. The program concluded with a vote of thanks and the presentation of a token of appreciation to the esteemed resource persons for their valuable guidance, time, and contributions to the training program. The visit proved to be an enriching and enlightening experience, inspiring future aviation professionals to pursue excellence in the field of air traffic management.
