Mangalore: Auto Rickshaw Drivers Taking Advantage of Petrol Price Hike?

Mangalore: Auto Rickshaw Drivers Taking Advantage of Petrol Price Hike?

Mangalore, Jun 7:
We have come across cases where honest auto drivers make us proud by handing over missing bags of passengers, or take the correct chargeeven when their meters are not working. But then there are those, many in number, who take undue advantage of any situation to make some extra bucks.

The petrol price hike is one such thing that has given auto drivers a good excuse to charge more from gullible passengers. It is ironical that when most autos use CNG or diesel, they still charge for petrol!

Narrating his personal experience to Daijiworld, Prasheesh Kumar Shetty*, a resident of Mannagudda said he had to travel from his home in Mannagudda to Lady Hill bus stop, for which the fare is Rs 17. On June 4, when he started from home the meter showed Rs 17, but on reaching the destination the meter had jumped to Rs 30. He was told by the auto driver that the fare was hiked by 30 by the auto drivers’ union, which was a blatant lie. However, being an informed citizen, when Shetty threatened the auto driver that he would report him to the police, he accepted Rs 17 and left hurriedly. Shetty opines that RTO should immediately arrange for surprise checking of electronic meters in the city to curb the menace.

This is mere one of the many instances of exploitation of the passengers by the auto drivers. Apart from meters being tampered with, there are many other ways in which  some auto drivers fleece their passengers, especially when ferrying them to far-flung places.

Another woman told Daijiworld that she hired an auto rickshaw to go to Lighthouse hill, and stopped at a shop just before where the uphill road begins. Despite paying the charge on the meter, the driver demanded extra as he had to drive up the hill, even though she would not be in the auto then!

In another instance, two lady passengers who asked the auto driver to ferry them to their apartments were stopped a little distance from their place of residence and told to get down, for no apparent reason, and he even demanded full charge despite not taking them to their destination. When the ladies started to argue and threatened to complain, he made a scene and people gathered. Being respectable people, they had no choice but to give up and walk the rest of the way. It was pure harassment, and that too of ladies.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Ivan D’Souza, president of Mangalore City Autorickshaw Drivers' Association clarified that the auto drivers' union had only submitted the appeal to hike the minimum fare to Rs 24 from the present rate of Rs 17, to the DC and the RTO. However, the decision on the revision of fares will be taken only after a meeting is conducted by the RTO. He appealed to the public to directly complain such matters with the RTO or the police.

RTO C Mallikarjuna said that in case of passengers facing such situations, they should take down the registration number of the auto and lodge a complaint with him without delay. "I will make the auto driver to come to my office and take necessary action," he said.

The drivers be it in Mangalore or Bangalore are not always the same. I had good and bad experiences in both cities. It is time however they switched to modern "autos",if they are available, instead of these rickety boxes which have no meters that work. Thailand, even 25 years ago,has excellent autos. Today they are only a tourist attraction and cost even more than the Taxis. But they never cheat. There is always a working meter and a smiling driver.

    Dear all,
Yesterday I decided to leave my car and travel by an auto.
I came back home by another auto. After about half an hour, the security man rang my bell. He told me that and auto driver is down and inquiring about me.
I went down and met the auto driver. He asked me "Sir, which mobile you have?". I said NOKIA Lumina 800.He gave my mobile back saying it was found on the seat.
Of course, I rewarded him and thanked.
There are some honest auto drivers too.

Auto drivers are total harassment cases, the union has enough sources to turn ball to their court.

There is a serious need for some control here. Wish we had metros/trams in all the cities

Same thing happened to me as well, from bendore to Lalbagh near punja building I usually pay Rs 32/33 but on the 6th when I traveled in an auto when I reached PVS building itself the meter was jumping and it showed 30 Rs...what is this...some drivers have done some trick their meter after 17 rs jumps to a huge amount in no time...RTO pls check on such meters. I heard some auto drivers have don't some changes in the meter and hence it just jumps to a big amount.

This menace is happening since long. But we have to oblige auto drivers harsh demands as we don't have any other option.I had many such bad experiences in the past. But now I am keeping quiet because it is of no use and waste our energy by arguing with auto drivers. As the saying goes every dog has its own day. Then they might feel the brunt. That what only we can hope. This is happening in most of the City buses. They too arbitrarily collecting the fare from the passengers without any ethics as per the whims and fancy of the conductors. They are the boss,we can not question. For us God is great. That is the only solace for us.

The RTO should seriously take up this matter with the Autorickshaw Union and come with a standard rate which is available to the general public as well. Passengers travelling by rail are also targetted by these rickshaw drivers quoting ridiculous amounts instead of using the actual meter.

There was petrol hike not gas hike. Most of them are not aware that most of the auto rickshaw in mangalore are run by gas.

Most of the auto drivers demand more nowadays. If the meter shows 27 rs and if we give 30, they wont give the change back. Say " Piraa kaali povochhaa ??"

Police must take immediate action aginst auto drivers.

All the Auto's in Mangalore and Udupi should compulsory fix the meters on their Auto and Passengers should pay the money as per the actual meter reading.(The way Mumbai is doing at present) I too observed last time during my vacation some auto's are charging heavily to passengers who are unknown to them but there are few honest drivers who takes only the resonable amount. We are not here to blame the auto drivers instead of that RTO should implement pay by meter policy with an immediate effect...
