Mumbai: Mantralaya Fire - Indifference, Chaos, and Lucky Escape...

Navin D'Cunha, Mumbai

Mumbai, Jun 22: I was on the third floor of the Mantralaya when the fire broke on Thursday June 21 afternoon. It was a harrowing experience with chaos everywhere.

Before I entered the building a small short circuit had already occurred. People outside the Mantralaya though had no idea of what had happened inside and what was going to happen in a few minutes. I took my pass and went inside. The corridors smelled of burnt cables but everyone went about their usual business making gestures with their nose every now and then.

About 15 minutes later, after finishing my work, I headed back to my car where my wife and baby daughter were waiting. I was glad I told them to wait in the car as my wife had wanted to accompany me inside.

As I moved through the 3rd floor corridor, I saw smoke coming out through the 4th floor windows. It wasn’t much but was a sure indicator of something big to come. The staff there was just taking pictures, laughing and joking about it. It didn’t strike anyone to pick up the fire extinguisher. I even overheard one lady saying “last year the same floor had a short circuit”

As I moved through the stairs, the commotion seemed to increase. By the time I reached the ground floor, people came in hundreds behind me shouting and screaming. I was afraid more of getting injured in the stampede than the fire. The revolving doors at the entrance/exit made it more difficult to escape the building. One lady got stuck and started screaming for help. Someone from the back shouted in a loud voice “calm down and exit the building slowly.” It was only when I got to the outside that I could see the extent of damage done. The sky was filled with black smoke coming from the 4th floor. I was lucky to get out before the fire became major. I went to my car where I saw the relieved faces of my wife and daughter.

After that things went from bad to worse. Several explosions were heard. People on the ground began speculating, bomb blast, gas cylinders, AC compressors, it was utter chaos. It was not surprising to see the media arrive before the fire brigade. Fire engines rushed to the spot but seemed helpless as fire rose from one floor to another. People tried to lighten the mood through humour: “Adarsh scam files are burnt, now the ministers will get a clean chit.”

The footpath opposite the Mantralaya was blocked by onlookers and a few ministers with their armed security behind them. The roads were blocked so we were stuck for 2 hours along with a dozen other cars. The new Administrative building opposite the Mantralaya locked it’s gates as the babus there were too busy relishing the fire and acting as expert arsonists. The only thing missing from their hands was popcorn.

If the government cannot control fire on it own premises how can the common man feel safe. The ministers have a lot of questions coming their way and I hope people don’t take this lying down.

We always blame forigners. One thing we must question our self is WHAT WE ARE....??? Either congress or bjp. We are always good in ungreatfullness. Because we cant reach to their level & statusWe are selfish. We know only to take, not to give. Then we start blaming. At least because of them today we learned to wear pant & shirt. But the rubber is rubber. You hit on it & will never change it`s state. To pay land tax we need to pay bribe, if you dont pay they will herress you saying come tomorrow or after tomorrow & you are bound to pay penalty. Very sad. These all things are happening in karnataka under BJP. Thank you.

@ Henrey Misquith I could capture only 5 men up there thru my camera lense after zooming full where was the 6th one.  @ Riyana Loba is this the only way tht can cause short circuit and no other way I can give u a list of ways that can cause short circuit.

@ Sanjeev Kamath Were you standing there with a measure tape to measure the distance between Mantralaya and Fire Brigade Station at Marine Lines. did you measure the time that takes for a fire brigade van to tackle between the traffic on MK road and Queens naclace. to reach the destination or even M.G Road from any ange is this distance just half a Km for you understand it takes time they don't come flying to the spot.

I am not surprised. Since all the papers related to all the scams of maharashtra, the fire was the only weapon to destroy the evidences.

A common type of short circuit occurs when the positive and negative terminals of a battery are connected with a low-resistance conductor, like a wire. With low resistance in the connection, a high current exists, causing the cell to deliver a large amount of energy in a short time.
A large current through a battery can cause the rapid buildup of heat, potentially resulting in an explosion or the release of hydrogen gas and electrolyte (an acid or a base), which can burn tissue, cause blindness or even death.

Overloaded wires can also overheat, sometimes causing damage to the wire's insulation, or a fire. High current conditions may also occur with electric motor loads under stalled conditions, such as when the impeller of an electrically driven pump is jammed by debris this is not a short, though it may have some similar effects.

People normally does not bother much on this and least bothered to check the quality of wires they are using nor does not bother to consult an Electrical Engineer to get planned with the distribution of electricity.

Finding a good quality wire and a good Engineer are difficult in India thus we got a chance to see lot of fire accidents due to SHORT CIRCUIT.

Question is WHOM TO BLAME ? THE MANUFACTURERS ? THE AUTHORITY ? THE ENGINEERS OR OURSELF ??

The fire brigade located just half a kilometer away took 2 hours to reach. The fire tenders were extinguishing the smoke and not the fire. The files in the strategic floor were deliberately allowed to be burnt. Not even a single minister was inside, so also none of the senior officials. Only thing saved was the National Flag by obedient, truly patriotic class IV employees.
