Berlin, Feb 8 (IANS/DAPD): Sports car manufacturer Porsche will this year celebrate the 50th birthday of its flagship car, the 911.
The anniversary is "the main topic of 2013", Porsche said at its headquarters in Stuttgart.
The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart plans to present a special exhibition titled "50 years of Porsche 911" June 4-Sep 29.
The company also plans to send an original and unrestored 911 from 1967 out on a world tour.
The first 911 -- pronounced "nine eleven" -- was produced in 1963.
It was originally called the 901, but Peugeot had already secured the rights to all three digit model numbers with a zero in the middle.
As a result, it was renamed the 911.
With a total of 820,000 cars sold over seven vehicle generations, the 911 is the most successful sports car in the world, Porsche said.
