A Mumbai priest remembered, in new Pope's act

Mumbai, Mar 31 (IANS): Even as traditionalists took umbrage at Pope Francis I washing the feet of two young women on Maundy Thursday, some Mumbai Catholics Sunday recalled the pioneering spirit of late Father Hugh Fonseca.

Among those whose feet the new Pope washed as part of the ritual prayer services of Maundy Thursday were prisoners at a detention centre in Rome, including a Serbian Muslim woman.

Welcoming the Pope's move, Dolphy D'Souza, former president of the Bombay Catholic Sabha, reminisced Sunday about a similar incident that took place here in late 1990s.

Bombay Catholic Sabha is an organisation that works in the civic, political and social sectors for the allround development of the community.

An elated D'Souza said that Pope Francis I has set the tone, and laid down an example. The gesture would go a long way in women's empowerment within the Catholic Church.

"In the late 1990s, the late Father Hugh Fonseca, one of the few activist priests in his time, was the parish priest of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Malad (northwest Mumbai)," he said. D'Souza was then chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council of the same parish.

"At the Parish Council meeting, it was decided that during the Maundy Thursday ritual, at the mass, the priest would wash the feet of 12 female domestic workers. However, some parishioners complained to the bishop about this, and Father Fonseca was told by the bishop that the said act was against Cannon Law, and directed to abandon such a move," D'Souza reminisced.

D'Souza said that while Father Fonseca relented, in keeping with his vows of obedience to the bishop, he did not abandon the idea entirely.

"Father Fonseca washed the feet of the 12 male domestic workers at the altar, but directed me to wash the feet of the selected female house workers at the same time in the midst of the community below the altar," D'Souza said.

Stating that Father Fonseca's actions at the Holy Thursday ritual set an example long back, D'Souza said he was glad that the new Pope was sending out a clear message to ensure that women are given their due by today's church.

Maundy Thursday marks the time when Jesus laid down the ritual practice of the communal meal, as a coming together of disciples. The Sunday mass is a re-enactment of that meal.

The Bible describes how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, as a mark of the humility with which those who lead must serve.

Traditionally, elderly people in a parish are called to the alter, and their feet washed during Maundy Thursday mass.

God gave ten commandments. Jesus the God-Man lived a life of this ten commandments and gave a new commadment by washing his disciples feet. Boss washing servants feet employer washing employee feet teacher washing students feet. Jesus gave a topsi-tervi mind set. What we have to see here is the expression of the humble love at its heighest degree and try to put it into our life. If we live the life of ten commandments then this new commandment is not at all difficult and if we practice this new commandment then the life of ten commandment is not at all difficult. It is a call to follow the Trinity and not tradition. Thank you and God bless each one of us.

Very well said, Mathew... You have really got the spirit of the act. Traditions that are meaningless are best ignored...

Washing of the feet on the Maundy Thursday is the tradition of Lord Jesus we carry out. What I think Jesus wanted to remind us, to do this act when we are in our top of our pride. To serve others, to convince others, to show our humility, show our love towards our brotheren in our daily life. As a tradition once a year we can wash anyone's feet.We should put in to practise, witin our family. When father and son, mother and son, daughter and mother, among the sister's, among the in-law's confrontation is usual. We solve the problems too within ourselves most of the time, and some remain unsolved for life time too. When the problems settled within our selves, and rectifying the dues,We must join togather pray togather, and wash the feet of each other as the sign of humility and love and dine to gather. So the bondage of love reigns longer period within the families.Even husband and wife comes with an severe differences should come forward and do this act, so that our growing generation will witness the true love that Lord Jesus planted within our hearts. But do we ready to this and ready to humiliate in front of our wife? Or any other oponent? Let us think over during this Easter season. May God Bless us all.

JESUS washed the feet of the disciples. None of the disciples had socks and shoes, even doubt whether they had any country sandals. JESUS washed their dirty feet. The feet washing is being practiced as a tradition, but washing the feet of a person with socks/shoes and that of bare feet is an entirely different act of real humility and love. POPE FRANCIS wanted to wash the feet of the most hurting people, both men and women to show the love of CHRIST and it is time to break the traditions, but to return to the actual spiritual horizon. Even though JESUS did't any woman as His disciple through practical problems to follow Him everywhere, women were actively involved with His ministry and life on earth. How many men were close to the cross while He was in dire agony? Only women, but the men kept aloof. A woman, Mary was the first witness of the risen saviour and the first evangelist. When JESUS talked with the Samaritan lady at the well, instantly she became an evangelist and went to the village,
JESUS and His disciples were warmly welcomed at that village.
The women has to play far greater role in the Church ministry, their spiritual rights were locked for a very long time through the chains of traditions.
