Pics: Dayanand Kukkaje
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Apr 16: Those residing in Mangalore may be passing through these streets and lanes everyday, but in the hurried pace of life, scarcely do we have time to appreciate their beauty.

Ace Daijiworld photographer Dayanand Kukkaje had the opportunity to accompany Nikolai Singh, director, Meghalaya Paragliding Association on a paraglider and experience the breathtaking beauty and charm of Mangalore from the skies.

The paraglider was launched at Kenjar grounds on Tuesday April 16 as part of the SVEEP electoral campaign, with a message urging voters to exercise their franchise in the coming elections.

The paraglider flew around the city and landed back at Kenjar. The entire flight lasted for 40 minutes, bringing alive the tall buildings, the serene greenery, the quaint charm of old structures blended with the magnificence of modernity.

Look at the pictures closely, and see how many places can you recognize!

Unfortunately not a single road has a proper footpath. Even if it looks like a muddy footpath, we see cars, bikes, beedi shops and all unwanted stuff parked on it. Is this the modern city planning. Most of the roads in Mangalore look like frameless picture.

Brilliant picts. showing a birds eye view of modern Mangalore!! As many have said, Mangalore has lost its cultural and natural heritage. It is complete concrete jungle with ever depleting green cover after the advent of the land mafia. Considering its topography, natural beauty, and serenity, it should have been mainly promoted as a tourism, educational, medical hub and nurtured!!

Having been visiting Mangalore for the past 40 years, I for long used to eagerly await the yearly vacations to visit this serene and beautiful place, but no more for a single day!! Development is totally unplanned, zilch infrastructure, water, electricity problems, communally sensitive, moral policing, very high cost of living, humid climate, sky high realty prices etc.!! There are much much better tier II and III cities in India!!

In a few years there will be total chaos as the population increases!!

It is ok for those already settled here, but not at all recommended for those wishing to settle down!!

It is much better to stay in Mumbai and buy a farmhouse in the outskirts instead of going to Mangluru!!

Sorry and sad to state it has totally lost its glory!!

Mr Lawrence (USA), Sorry...i accidently pressed disagree instead of agree...so true. Mangalore is one place where you can find people who prefer their heritage to modern luxury. Change is inevitable. You cannot expect things to stay absolutely the same as 10 or 20 years ago. If it did then people would complain that there is no progress. We cannot remain primitive while the whole world is changing. But mangalore is definitely sticking to its roots. It still is the 8th cleanest city in India. My friends who have been to mangalore for the first time with me were enchanted to see the place. I didn't know what the fuss was all about. But now I do realize.

Spend one month in any metropolitan city or the smallest villages of India then we will realize mangalore's value.Change is required without loosing the original flavor. I can just go on and on as to why I believe Mangalore is one of the best cities in the country.

I have been living in Bangalore for the past 8 months now. Before that I have spent all my life in Mangalore but it was only after I moved here that I realized the value of living in a place like Mangalore.
Our little coastal city is nothing less than a heaven on earth. Every single thing about this place is so perfect (Except for the heat and the 'sanga' attacks). Mangalorean people are genuinely decent and approachable. Women feel safe in the streets. Children get the best education. Mangalore is the perfect mix of a modern day metro and a small town with strong values. The traffic is moderate, its not heavily populated and trust me when I say this...we mangaloreans are smart and intelligent people. I had heard people say so before, but now I know it. I get to see that everyday at my work place.
Its been 4 days now since this article came up and ever since then I have not closed this window in my computer. I see these pictures everyday in the morning before starting work. Makes me feel proud to be a Mangalorean...If you take a look at the skyline of Bangalore or any other metros in India you will only see mess. But these picture...the clean roads, tall buildings and lots and lots of green everywhere...I hope and pray that Mangalore stays Mangalore forever. What we need now is more high end job opportunities for our youth so that they get to show their productivity and talent within our own city. It is sad that the youth have to leave Mangalore to get good jobs.

Picture is quite depressing.Few years back if you you have a look westwards from Tagore park or from Aloysius college Mangalore was a coconut groove. Now only a patch of green left.We have lost culturally and geographycally our Kudla long back.

The Nature has been brutally chopped off, no more TEARS OF RAIN S, just the HEAT & Humidity of a scorching sun and SCUM OF POLLUTED AIRAND diseases, unheard of.

GREED AND FALSE PRIDE,AT THE COST OF NATURAL BEAUTY.
Intelligent Balanced Minds could have made it Mandatory to synchronise and balance nature more honestly with SIMPLY PLANTINGAND CARING FOR TREES.

Photographs portraying in and around Bajpe, Kenjar, etc., took us down the memory lane towards our childhood days. With a humble beginning in a village atmosphere we all set our foot in different directions in life but the homeland and the memories attached to it are the ones that don’t let you forget your roots. Our school life at Bajpe and inclusive participation in household & farming activities during spare time and holidays, taking cows and buffaloes to the forestland for grazing, etc., are a few memories of our times but the photographs give contemporary image of emerging Kudla finding new routes for the old roots.

Picture number 13 shows that the tallest building of Mangalore ( Work in progress) Planet SKS.Lawrence (USA), those houses next to this upcoming building are not slums. They are small tiled houses.Planet SKS is a 36 Floor building with each apartment from 21st to 36 th floor having a small swiming pool inside their apartment. This is going to be the tallest residentail building of Karnataka.Mangalore is a far better place when we compared it to other places like Bangalore, Mumbai etc.But for the greenery to Vanish its the greed of people for money and migration to USA , Australia and Canada by our fellow Mangloreans who are responsible for selling their properties to the builders and NRI's buying 4 to 5 aptmts each which encourages the builders to build more buildings.

Some of the tiled houses are built centuries ago with mud walls and brick floors. A friend of mine who has whole sale business in Bunder (Bundasale) lives in one of those houses. The house has no proper ventilation, no attached toilets or bath rooms, rat infested and cow shed next to the bed room. He can afford to build a bunglow but he says, it is his ancesteral property and has a sentimental value for it. He is money rich but house poor.I asked him, what if his great grand fathers had a sentimental value for the caves they used to live in?

BTW, my definition of"Slum" is different than others.

A few high rise buildings surrounded by slums. Roads filled with cow dung, dog litter, plastic bags, banana skins, chocolate wrapers, chewed gum, cigarette butts and what not? Atmosphere smells like fermented fish dipped in the coffee. Public building walls are decorated with chewed beatle leave spit. It is my Mangalore and I should be proud of it. I cannot dis-own my grandmother just because she smells like.....I should blame myself for not taking proper care of her. She is still beautiful to me and I wish someone should take good care of her.

While the photos and the aerial scenes look beautiful and fantastic, I
am sorry guys, I do not like the present Mangalore anymore because it is a concrete jingle with no proper infrastructure like roads, walkways, drainage and rain water outlets - most importantly it is massively overcrowded with heavy traffic and worst of all there is virtually no traffic rules and regulations in place. So I prefer my old Mangalore of the! 1960 and 1970's which was peaceful with full of tranquility and natural beauty.

I fully agree with Eric Coelho whatever he has mentioned is the reality of Mangalore. The Ariel view of any place will look good and the new buildings are given more leverage to this beauty. But if you see the city at the ground level it is dirty, unclean, congested,no system at the traffic,no proper roundabout,no proper signals.People wander wildly inside the city in a unorganized manner.Eating and spitting pan every where is quite normal. The incomplete road structure is really kills the beauty of the inner city,The bus & Railway station, eatery outlets, hospitals are one of the dirtiest places one can notice in Mangalore. No doubt city is developing and can be made more beautiful and can be made to compete the beautiful cities of the world,if our city planning & developing authority act impartially with zero corruption towards development.

Mangalore has its natural beauty. It does not require human to beautify it. On ground Mangalore is horrible. The roads andinfrastructure does not match and cannot match international standards. Let us not make a fool of ourself that we match New york or Tokyo or Shanghai. Let us look around 10 sq. km outside mangalore and I can say without doubt that it has its natural beauty. The inside part of mangalore within 10 sq. km was beautiful which is wiped out through high rise buildings. Let us say it is natural beauty that holds mangalore to international standards but not man made disaster on ground in Mangalore.
