Mangalore, Jan 7: At last the long-awaited work of Suratkal - B C Road four -ane road took off at Suratkal near here on Friday January 6. Though the works had official been inaugurated some three months ago, the actual spadework had not taken off owing to various reasons. Now with the starting of the works, one can hope that the much needed four-lane road will be ready within the stipulated period of 40 months.
It was actually on October 6 that union road transport minister K H Muniappa had officially inaugurated the our lane works in the premises of Karnataka Polytechnic at Kadri here. But thereafter, there were no signs of work being carried out.
The 35-kilometre distance between Suratkal and B C Road includes parts of National Highway 17 and 48. The contract has been given Redcon Company. The upgradation of the present highway into four lane is a far-sighted decision, as it will improve transport facility between Bangalore and the city. Moreover, Special Economic Zone (SEZ), ONGC Project and possible boom in the software industry would surely benefit a lot with the four-lane road.
