Mangalore, Jan 8: The exemplary act of humanity shown by Dakshina Kannada district police in arranging a round-the-clock ‘reliable pool of blood donors’ to be used during extreme emergencies has come in for appreciation.

According to spdk.blogspot.com, the official website of the DK police, the district police identified 303 police personnel attached to District Armed Reserve (DAR) and listed them as voluntary blood donors.

“During an emergent need of blood in the district Wenlock Hospital the public can avail help of donors,” says Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police B Dayananda.

Following a written request from Wenlock Hospital district surgeon, the superintendent of police embarked on a task of identifying the blood group of voluntary blood donors. The list of such donors was forwarded to the district surgeon and a copy of the list was also maintained in the City Control Room and DAR duty office.

In case of emergency and in dire need of blood, Wenlcok Hospital will contact Control Room or DAR and specify the required blood group. The concerned donor in turn will be informed and sent to the hospital for donating blood.

Thus in an extreme emergency the hospital with the help of the police can arrange for any blood group without much delay. However, these donors are to be used as ‘backup’ only after exhausting other sources of availability of blood by hospital authorities like blood bank and other voluntary donors.

They can also be used when any rare group (available within this list) is required. According to the weblog, there are four donors with blood group, O+ve, 129 donors of the rare O-ve, 65 donors of A+ve and two donors of the rarest A-ve.

There are 83 donors with blood group B+ve, five who are B-ve and only one donor with AB+ve blood. Doctors lauding the initiative hoped that the police will accommodate voluntary donors of rare blood groups like AB+ into the list.
