Udupi, Jan 11: A daylight robbery that took place at Petri around 11-15 am on Tuesday has shocked the residents of the area.
Unidentified robbers took advantage of the lone presence of Gowribai (75) in the house of her son Krishna Naik and his wife, both bank employees who were out on work.
Two young men in their early twenties reportedly asked for her grandson Sunil. Gaining entry on that basis, they are said to have pushed Gowribai to a corner, threw chilli powder into her eyes and gagged and bound her. Then they relieved her of the gold earrings and chain on her person, and also gold bangles and Rs 1,000 lying in the next room.
The old woman was reportedly bound in the bathroom and the culprits thereupon seemed to have ransacked the whole house for valuables. Brahmavar circle inspector Vidyashankar, forensic experts and sniffer dog squad conducted investigations.
Police sources said that since the culprits gained entry by mentioning the grandson Sunil's name, it could be some known persons' act.
