Washington, Sep 27 (IANS/EFE): Hillary and Bill Clinton's only daughter Chelsea announced in the early hours Saturday on social networks that she had given birth to her first child, a baby girl called Charlotte.
"Marc and I are full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky," Chelsea wrote on her Facebook and Twitter accounts. The proud grandparents re-tweeted the good news immediately.
At the moment, no further details are known about the birth, which makes the Clintons grandparents precisely in the year that Hillary will announce whether, as all indications suggest, she will again aspire to be the Democratic presidential candidate in the 2016 elections.
Chelsea Clinton, who spent her teenage years in the White House, announced April 18, during a Clinton Foundation event while seated next to her mother, the news that her parents had waited to hear for years: at last they were going to be grandparents.
When Chelsea married investment banker Marc Mezvinsky in 2010, former president Bill Clinton said that "Hillary wanted this marriage because she wants to be a grandmother more than she wanted to be president".
Since then, both Bill and Hillary never missed a chance to remind their daughter and, in passing, the whole country, that they really really wanted to have grandchildren.
Chelsea and Marc, the son of two former members of Congress, met as teenagers through their families, studied at Stanford University in California at the same time, but did not come together as a couple until 2005.
The Clintons' daughter, 34, worked until a month ago as a special reporter for the NBC television network and collaborated with numerous organisations, above all with the Clinton Foundation.
On Aug 29, Chelsea announced, also on social networks, that she had parted from NBC to concentrate on her work with the Clinton Foundation and on her approaching motherhood.
