Udupi: Kaup Bundh Successful yet Peaceful - Security Beefed Up

Udupi, Nov 18: The voluntary bundh observed in Kaup constituency protesting against the proposed Nagarjuna Thermal Project in the Nandikur and surrounding areas received good support from locals on Saturday November 18.




The bundh call was given by all parties and local organization after the administration began Nagarjuna work on Friday November 17 with the help of police force.  As reported earlier more than 200 people including MP Manorama Madhwaraj, MLA Lalaji Mendon and several other leaders were arrested for protesting against the Nagarjuna work.

On Saturday shops, business concerns in the area were closed while only the express buses plying between the city and Mangalore moved about.  However, some persons tried to block road in the Padubidri area by keeping wooden logs, tyres on the road.  All the shops in Mudarangadi, Bada Yermal, Nandikur, Uchila and other areas remained closed on Saturday.


However, no incidents of violence have been reported.  Meanwhile fishermen too participated in the bundh by not venturing into the sea on Saturday.  They organized a protest meet in front of the deputy commissioner's office and submitted an appeal to him.




MP Manorama Madhwaraj, Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon, MLA Raghupati Bhat, former MLA U R Sabhapati, Pramod Madhwaraj, Somanath Nayak, Lakshman Shetty and others participated in the protest meet.
