Mangalore, Jan 17: An interaction programme on ‘Is it impossible to control violence without lati-charge and firing' was organised at University College here on Tuesday January 16.

Addressing the students of the college, district superintendent of police B Dayanand stressed on the responsibility of the citizens to abide by the law and said that every citizen was policeman without uniform.

He further said that policemen are like doctors and the extreme methods used by the police like lathi charge and curfew are akin to the strong antibiotics used by doctors for serious ailments. The policemen use these methods to keep up the well being of the society during untoward incidents, he said.

He called for a reformation of the laws and said that the laws which were brought in to force during the British era are outdated now. He also agreed that the police department needs to upgrade its technology.

Speaking about the lack of guidance to youth in today’s world, he gave the example of the Air Force recruitment rally held recently and lamented that only a few passed the written test. Though the district is called a land of intellectuals, the results of the test clearly indicate the lack intellectual powers among the youth, but the same youth will be part of violent group during riots, he observed.
