Bengal observes Gandhi Jayanti


Kolkata, Oct 2 (IANS): West Bengal on Friday joined the rest of India in paying homage to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 146th birth anniversary through floral tributes and all-faith prayer meetings.

Governor K.N. Tripathi took part in the main function at Gandhighat in Barrackpore of North 24 Parganas district where he offered flowers at the martyrs' column amid rendering of Ramdhun.

Women took part in spinning the yarn, all faith prayer services were held and while school students read excerpts from Gandhi's writings.

The programme concluded with Gandhi's favourite bhajans like "Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram" and "Vaishnava Jana To".

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered the leader in a Facebook and Twitter post.

Gandhi's portrait in the state secretariat "Nabanna" and other places were garlanded as was his statue in the Maidan.

Prayer services were held in various parts of the city as well as the district to commemorate his austere lifestyle.
