Mangaluru, Dec 17: A team led by assistant commissioner and other revenue officials swooped down on Thokkottu Junction, supervised an operation to demolish compound walls, and gave final deadline of Monday next to completely clear the shops that have been impeding highway 66 widening work.

The revenue officials said that the operation had to be taken up as the owners of these shops had failed to comply with the instructions contained in the notices served on them over four weeks back. Equipped with a backhoe, they cleared some obstacles, which they believe, has sunk in a sense of urgency among those who were found to be sluggish in vacating the spot.

The officials razed to the ground compound walls of two complexes standing in front of Sahara Hospital at Thokkottu, front compound wall of REB Complex, and vacant ATM building of Axis Bank.

Assistant commissioner, Dr Ashok, said that the work of widening the national highway 66 had been hit badly as buildings at Thokkottu Junction have not been cleared, although the work of highway widening is in final stages. He said that vehicular traffic at Thokkottu has been hit, and the people in general are facing multiple problems.

"Compensation has already been disbursed to building owners. Notices had been served on the concerned four weeks back to clear the buildings. As they failed to vacate the buildings, we have convinced them of the urgency to vacate, by demolishing some compound walls. The work of evicting buildings will begin on Monday morning, and the owners of shops and other establishments have to clear their belongings from this spot before this deadline. Navayuga Construction Company, which has got contract for widening of this stretch of national highway 66 has almost completed work as per the plan, and the work will conclude with the construction of fly over at Thokkottu and tollbooth at Talapady. During the works, service road will be required at Thokkottu, and for this purpose, these shops have to be cleared. Work will consume 30 metres of space on either side of the road here," he explained.

Effect of the High powered committed by the Transport ministry at the center. It is looking at the each and every project which is running behind schedule and taking action. 73 national highway projects are in a stalled position and around 39 of them have been terminated - as given in the statement in the parliament. Other projects like this are being cleared off road blocks.. Now, India is building 18 km per day from 2 km per day 1.5 years back. target is 30 km per day by March 2016.

The quality of work done by navayuga is very poor and I think the media and the locals should take this matter very seriously . Once toll gate opens , nothing is going to stop them from looting us . Might as well manage to get better roads instead .. Especially if you notice the yekur to thokottu stretch , there are a lot of undulations on the road because of negligence at work . Daijiworld should go and report an article on this soon .

I don't understand why the bjp leaders BD leaders never come up and help the MCC on these issues.
A strong opposition from locals is very important to solve these problems.
    We need wide roads.

In Suratkal, Highway and flyover work completed long back but a portion of service road still pending on the heart of the city.Is this not visible to the authorities to clear the obstructing buildings to construct the service road . This place is always congested, dangerous for pedestrians. Do they demolish the way did it in Thokkottu ?

In Suratkal, it is not at all possible to construct service road without demolishing part of the old market, shops opposite the bus stand and the old pipal tree with podium. If the concerned authorities don’t have courage to demolish buildings coming in the way, and instead of spending crores on the flyover, they should have constructed a small roundabout at the junction, with speed breakers ahead. This would have beautified the town.

When court notices have been duly served on the concerned people and whereas due compensation has also been paid it is expedient that people comply with law unless of course they have appealed against the said order and a stay has been obtained.

In the absence of these requirements, it is in the interests of the public that they highway is constructed after removing all hurdles.

one day this has to happen. There people don't care about court notice and all, enjoy the compensation, but when it comes to vacate the location, they will not do... so if we need the development, highway to be widened, we need to see this enforcement.

Mr Pune were u in mlore???? to say that people don care of court notices then it should be one of u. b a common layman then think 3-4 week notice what a common man can do, he needs to think of family who is depended on him. its compensation and not monthly income and one has to think what he must do next. court notices are respected by every individual.

boss... Many people carry place as Dubai, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi ... and still comments on Mangalore. That doesn't mean you can question them on this. I am a Mangalorean who can bet matured than you. Coming to the point, if let freely, our people will built shelter on the NH and live there. Yes, harsh statement , but fact. That doesn't mean we can let everybody ( yes, financially poor ) to enjoy this for their life time. One side we scribe on the infrastructure and the other side we raise concern while such actions is taken. It's everybody's responsibility that we take care ourselves... not to ruin the public properties like this. When ever there will be demolition happens on the street vendors also, same questions... the shop owners pay huge tax and open shops and a simple layman comes and sits opening his shop ( sort of ) in front of the shop. These stuffs are not accepted... there are places for open selling where they can go and sit... Any ways, let's not take excuse and try to enjoy public infrastructure because of our problem. If you are so much concerned about these people, why don't you arrange something for these people...
