Mangaluru, Apr 6: As a new day dawned and everyone was busy in their own world, in a dustbin opposite the public toilet near Hampankatta road here, lay a human being with flies hovering over him.
On receiving information, Joseph Crasta of Snehalaya Charitable Trust spotted this man lying on a pile garbage and swung into action. Ironically, many two-wheelers were parked close by and their riders and pedestrians moving along this busy road had seen the man but chose to look the other way.
Snehalaya Charitable Trust, an NGO, which takes care of destitutes, arrived and picked up the man who was dirty and stinking. Crasta and his team lovingly took him and immediately bathed, fed, and restored his appearance.
Later in the evening, he was admitted to Yenopoya hospital where he is currently being treated, as his fingers were amputated and he has got gangrene underneath his feet. The person has been identified as Sudarshan from Theerthahalli, aged about 65 years. No information is available yet on his background, family or how he became a destitute.
Indeed, Joseph Crasta and his Snehayalaya deserve all appreciation for their humanitarian work. They have rescued the less unfortunate from the streets time and again and given scores of people a new lease of life. May their good work continue, and may their tribe increase.
