Mangaluru, May 5: "Water availability in the Thumbay vented dam is currently 5.6 ft which is sufficient only for seven days. If the water is supplied once in three days, it can last for 21 days," said Mangalore City Corporation commissioner H N Gopalakrishna.
He was addressing a review meeting held to discuss water scarcity problem. The meeting was chaired by district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai at the DC's office here on Thursday May 5.
"In city, there are 174 borewells and 90 open wells. Out of the 90 open wells, 22 belong to the government and 14 are owned by individuals. MCC is using water from these wells to supply to the needy. MCC has also identified 41 open wells and has sent water samples for testing their purity. The reports of 13 open wells have come. Out of 13 wells, water from six wells can be used for drinking purpose and water from seven wells is not good for drinking. Another 13 wells are yet to be cleaned," he said.
Adding to this, mayor Harinath said, "Presently, MCC is providing water in tankers to those places where there is acute scarcity. Water is procured in 22 tankers throughout the city for all wards. And from Friday May 6 water will be supplied through 30 pickup trucks with water tanks."
DC AB Ibrahim directed MCC authorities to take possession of borewells used for the construction of new buildings. He furthered asked to take possession of private borewells and open wells to meet the drinking water scarcity.
DC Ibrahim asked the MSEZ officers to provide stored water to meet the water demand of the city. He insisted MCC officials to initiate action against people using illegal boosters to suck the water with force in apartments and buildings.
The DC further passed an order that people cannot drill borewell in private properties in the entire district till May 31, except to provide drinking water for the public.
Speaking on the occasion, district in-charge minister, Rai said, "Give first preference to drinking water for people in city. Officers should work with responsibility and respond to drinking water problem of the people. The MCC officers should not go on leave till problem is solved. ZP CEO should take strict action against PDOs who are absent for the meeting, after seeking the reason for their absence."
State health minister U T Khader said that state government has provided sufficient funds to solve the drinking water problem.
MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza, ZP CEO Srividya, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, ZP president Meenakshi Shanthigodu and vice-president Kasturi Panja were present.
