Bangalore, Dec 24: Their victims never knew what hit them. This gang targeted persons driving alone, crashed into their vehicles, picked up a quarrel with the victims and robbed them. They often stripped the victim bare, taking even their undergarments. Some gang members gained entry into the victims’ vehicles by hitch-hiking. Most victims turned out to be call centre drivers who offered a lift.
Viveknagar police nabbed six of the nine members of the gang that has committed 11 robberies. The police were surprised because the gang never tried to dispose of the stolen vehicles.
The accused are S Chandrashekhar (33), Venkatesh (22), Devaraj (22), M Shankar (23), A Ravikumar and Javed (23), all residents of Garvebavipalya and Naganathapura off Hosur Road.
The gang was brutally efficient in executing the robberies. One victim was bound, gagged, stripped and thrown onto a lonely dark stretch in Thalaghattapura, between Mysore Road and Magadi Road. The driver lay there for six hours before being rescued. Every successful robbery seemed to spur them on, a police officer said.
The gang struck at Chennarayapatna (Hassan), Hassan, Kollegal (Chamarajnagar) and after one such robbery, they withdrew money from two ATMs after getting the password from the victim. A manhunt has been launched to trace the other members of the gang.
The accused confessed that they took to crime so they could enjoy the luxuries of life. They were all PUC dropouts from middle-class families.
