Forest fires engulf protected zones in Peru


Lima, Nov 24 (IANS): The Peruvian government are tackling forest fires affecting 10 regions, including four protected natural zones, on an war footing.

The Environment Ministry was told that the fires were burning in the Cutervo National Park, Pagaibamba Protection Forest, Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge and Cerros de Amotape National Park, Efe news reported on Thursday.

Efforts were on by "different state institutions" to control the blazes that were spreading due to high temperatures, strong winds and dry climatic condition prevailing in the country.

In addition to the fire brigades, 30 experienced rangers, army troops, volunteer park rangers and residents of nearby communities were tackling the spread.

The Peruvian government declared a state of emergency in several districts.
