Mangaluru: 'Karmika Bhavan' to come up in city shortly - Ivan D'Souza

Mangaluru, Apr 17: Chief whip of Karnataka Legislative assembly Ivan D’Souza on Monday, April 17 informed that the proposal for constructing a 'Karmika Bhavan' in teh city has been given a green signal by the state government.

Addressing media persons at his office in Mangaluru City Corporation, Ivan said, "An amount of Rs 2.5 crore has been sanctioned for the 'Karmika Bhavan' which will come up at Kadri Hills on a 100/100 land. I had raised the issue at the Vidhana Parishad and requested during the session. The bhavan will address the issues of construction workers, rickshaw drivers and other daily wage labourers. The bhavan will also be used for meeting and programmes of the laborers and workers. The construction should begin soon. It is a gift for the workers for the upcoming May Day. I have also requested the state government to introduce soft skills training institutes and garment industries for the benefit of beedi workers and women."





Road repair near Maravoor Bridge

"Maravoor bridge will come up at a cost of Rs 16 crore out of the total amount of Rs 50 crore sanctioned for the widening the 2.5 km road from Maravoor Bridge to Mangalore International Airport under Mangaluru City Corporation limits. The amount was allotted during the recent budget. The roads on both sides of the bridge will be renovated," said Ivan.

"Discussions are on with the railway department for the renovation of the under-bridge too," he added.

Evening polytechnic college

Ivan also informed that evening classes at Karnataka Polytechnic College will be started soon. "The evening college will give an opportunity for the students to upgrade their knowledge. Electrical and Electronics engineering and Mechanical engineering will be available in the evening courses," he said.

"An amount of Rs 60 lacs have been sanctioned for the renovation of the boys hostel of Karnataka Polytechnic at Kadri," he added.

Decision on water rationing within a week

"Presently, 4.31 mtr water is available at Thumbay dam. I had a meeting with the deputy commissioners and other officials. There is a chance of residents getting water daily. A decision will be taken withing this week. Water rationing is being done for better water management and the welfare of the city. We do not want to repeat our mistakes and put people into trouble with no water," he said.

Win in by-election

"Congress' win in Nanjangud and Gundlupet by-poll has sent shock waves in the BJP camp. They were earlier speaking about 224 seats. Now it has come down to 150. BJP also blamed the party workers for their defeat. BJP is not able to find suitable candidates to contest 224 seats," said Ivan.

CID inquiry into Ahmed Qureshi issue

Answering a query on Ahmed Qureshi's alleged torture by police, he said, "I had met Qureshi at hospital. He spoke about the atrocities of police which has landed him in his present condition. He alleged that his present health condition is due to the police torture. Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara has ordered a CID inquiry into the incident. The guilty will be punished and justice will be served."

Three people were handed over cheques amounting to Rs 1,29,541 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund by Ivan D'Souza on the occasion.
