Mangaluru: Landmark returns - Clock Tower to be resurrected in new design

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 28: The city is bracing up to get back one of the prominent landmarks, Clock Tower, it had lost a few years ago. Blue print of the new clock tower, which will come up exactly where it once stood, has been prepared, and it will be a part of the works under Smart City project.

It is gathered that construction of clock tower has been included under the Smart City project at the insistence of city mayor, Kavitha Sanil. Clock Tower construction was not part of the Smart City project envisaged earlier. As the mayor insisted on it, it was included later. As per the estimate, clock tower construction, including the main building, yard work, alluminium ladders, clocks and electrical installations, will cost Rs 90 lac. The mayor wants this project to be executed on priority and accordingly, blue print is ready and the work is in the stage of calling for tenders.

Old Clock tower (L) and proposed one

The tower will come up adjacent to the place where the the old one once stood, attached to the park next to it. The tower will be surrounded by green landscape, with a small flower garden around it and four giant clocks will be fitted atop the tower. The mayor wants to bring back the glory of the Clock Tower which once signified the identity of the city.

Kavitha Sanil said that it has been her dream to build a new Clock Tower at the spot where the old one once stood. She said that like the old one, the new tower will be 21 metres high.

About two decades ago, the Clock Tower was demolished for widening of the road. Even after the tower disappeared, the place is still known with the name, 'Clock Tower'.

I always wanted to see a walking bridge. A lot of people cross from the Mangalore Central to Town Hall. They could have put a clock on the bridge if they needed to put a time. They also need a walking bridge in Hampankatta. There is no signal for traffic as its free movement. And people are unable to cross the streets because of this. There should have been a 4 bridge connected for the 4 sides. Now that could be iconic and beloved if its designed properly.

MCC - please set the priorities right. First try to fix the footpaths and get a good system in place to manage waste generated by citizens. Once the city is organized and clean, spend on beautification.

With 90 lakhs, we can lay so many kilometers of footpath and get the city ready for monsoon. Totally against using my tax money to this.

Hi everyone! Do we think this Clock Tower is so important at present situation? is it so necessary to construct it even after we face lot of hurdles, difficulties in Mangalore? Let the Government change the project and do some thing useful to the nature. Lack of Water, No proper Greenery lawns ? main thing can we imagine the roads that too National highway in such a horrible condition? No proper Fky over right in nantoor circle. There is no proper footpath provided for general public. Look into the condition at Nantoor, morning as well evening. Check the National highway NH 66 condition in Panambur area. No government officials is bothered into this. In Spite of this planning is going on for Clock tower in our Public money. Who is accountable to our money?

After all after two decades we would find the lost 'Tower'. Mangalore is a 'River City' surrounded by Nethravati and Palguni rive; a 'Port City' by connecting world to the city, " Beach City" with several beaches nearby to attract tourists, 'Industrial City' with Giant Industries like MRPL, MCF, KIOCL etc., "Tourisim City' with Century old Chapels, Temples, Pilikula National Park etc. etc. Mangalore has thousands of opportunities to attract tourists and can stand like "Singapore", but for the inability of our leaders after Late Srinivasa Mallya we are in the fear of disappear from tourism map.

Mangalore is an island surrounded by two rivers. First of all a four lane ring road is to be built around the city at the bank of two rivers with garden at the river bank.Boating should be permitted in both rivers from October to May. A private vehicle terminal should be arranged somewhere at the outskirt of the city to prevent congestion inside the city. If we have public interest and will power in our great leaders, Mangalore will become next to Singapore

Clock Tower has been the 'landmark' of the city. Now we are happy to regain the old beauty and identity after two decades of demolition. It will be identified anywhere of the city like "Hanuman Statue' in Delhi, If it is heightened some few meters with statue of 'RANI ABBAKKA' or 'SRINIVAS MALLYA' or 'ASHOKA STHAMBHA.' at the top of the tower and the ' CLOCK' at the height of 21 meters.

It's a great idea and we need this Landmark back and we need more and more such projects so tourist can come to Mangalore..... not to see these big apartments. I would also request Mayor Kavitha Sanil to have Digital Temperature Panel Display on this Clock Tower.
