Latvian tourist on Kerala visit drugged, raped before murder; 2 arrested

Thiruvananthapuram, May 3 (Deccan Chronicle): The Latvian woman who had come to Kerala seeking help for depression was raped and drugged before being murdered, the police told on Thursday.

The decomposed body of the Latvian tourist was found - hung upside down, head severed - in a forest last month.

Two suspects have been arrested. The police say they lured her, drugged and sexually assaulted her.

The woman had arrived in Thiruvananthapuram in February. She was hoping to find solace at one of the ayurvedic centres the state is famous for. A few weeks later, she went to a beach in Kovalam and never returned. According to her sister, who accompanied her to India, she didn't tell her before leaving the centre.

On April 21, the police found a woman's decomposed body near a mangrove forest in Thiruvallam. The woman's sister identified her body and the DNA samples confirmed it.

The suspects, say police sources, are drug peddlers. One of them is a repeat offender who has sexually abused women and men in the past in the same isolated marshy area where the victim's body was found, sources added.

According to NDTV report, senior police officials confirmed that "her postmortem report didn't reveal much because the body was badly decomposed". However, police sources said they have been able to confirm that the accused had the motive of rape and murder.

"It was a blind case. Even with various means of investigation and scientific evidence, we could find that it was rape and murder. The victim was lured into this area, given drugs and sexually assaulted. She was murdered when she resisted," NDTV reported senior police Officer Manoj Abraham saying.

The arrest comes 10 days after her body was discovered. "The accused thought they will be able to give it an impression of suicide if they left the body hanging. We have worked on circumstantial evidence and have made a water-tight case. The police officers who probed the case will be given a badge of honour," Kerala DGP Loknath Behera said.

The woman's sister, who was earlier upset with the way the investigation was being done, now says the police have done their best. "Senior police officer Manoj Abraham has been in touch with me. I know they are doing their best to investigate and ensure justice. I am satisfied with what they are doing, and don't want to delve into the past," she said.

The woman's funeral was held on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram and there will be a memorial on Sunday. "It will be a tribute to her life," the woman's sister was quoted as saying by NDTV. She added, "My sister loved Kerala and received a lot of love and support. We don't want to leave India with bad memories."

Repeat offenders due to our weak justice system & infrastructure. Disgusting. A revolution needed by people to compell govt to fill judicial vacancies, judicial reforms & police reforms & building high security prisons. Recently in 2014 in Karnataka 66 lawyers appointed APP had bribed their way thru, forged signature of judges & evaluaters & attached additional answer scripts. They r still serving in Karnataka wer people like Meiti rule us coz we r politically divided on religious lines.

Thsi incident is very rare in kerala, and the tourist herself went to the lurers without any adherence to the tourist package by which she came to kerala, not abducted....This can happen anywhere in the world but Kerala, being a state in India,is being tarnished by foreign media clubbing it with other underdeveloped states conditions...Politicians and law are not such corrupt morons in kerala as in other states, once such incident came to limelight they usually ensure that such incident never repeat.....This should be viewed as an isolated incident and not use it to tarnish kerala's image....If this was occured in thailand,no one would tarnish it,but Kerala is being tarnished because it is in India, the land of filth and backwardness for foreigners thanks to north indian states....Had Kerala been a nation like Srilanka no one would have tarnished it this much.....Just because other states are filthy and backward, why kerala, which is not like that needed to be projected negatively?

All criminal things happening under very nose of BJP rule in all states is a matter of great concern. It not only has spoiled image of India all over the world, but also, has given courage to criminals from other states who were so far having at least little fear of law. Now they know that strict action promised by politicians is only an eye wash and nothing is actually happening. Criminals are built into political parties and there is nothing to fear.
