Mangalore: Girija Vyas Brings Police Brutality to the Light

Nuns and Women Expose Mangalore Police’s Brutality

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (GA)

Mangalore, Sep 17: Amidst all incidents of desecration of holy places, stone-pelting, caning, one particular scene will perhaps haunt a many for long. Yes! We are speaking about police's brutality on women and nuns at Kulshekar, Permannur church premises in particular and throughout other parts of the city in general.  Ask any one the victims, be it nuns, women or youth, all have their own experience of barbaric attitude of the police.  Kadri circle police inspector Ganapaty who has already become infamous by caning DYFI activists near MCC building a few days ago, has once again done the role of villain.

Police, who have the primary duty of providing protection to the people, behaved nothing better than animals with women, said one of the women from Kulshekar while speaking to this correspondent. We now have the personal account of some of the women and nuns who have either sustained physical injury or suffered mental trauma on that fateful day, Monday September 15.

Sr Sarita BS, the headmistress of Joseph's higher primary school, Kulshekar almost broke into tears as she narrated her experience. "We open our school at 7.45 am everyday. Accordingly, I went to the school premises on Monday to open school. But the police, who were guarding the premises, stopped me. But when told them that I am the headmistress and that I need to open my school, they let me in. I opened my office and also kept the school gates open. After a while a few of my staff came in. But the students who came to the school, went back seeing heavy police security at the gates," she started.

Since the parish priest had called the people to come to the church and pray, a few persons were inside the gate while a few more including many women were praying inside the church. "The main gate had been locked from inside and a few persons were shouting slogans inside the church gates. Police were standing outside the gate while almost 30-40 Bajrangdal activists were standing right behind them by the roadside. When police asked to leave the premises in silence since Section 144 was clamped, some of the women confronted them asking as why they were allowing 30-40 Bajrangdal activists to gathered together outside the gate. This enraged the police. Since the gates were locked, they could not enter in.

"As our people were talking to the police personnel, the Bajrangdal activists who were standing outside, started abusing our youth using filthy language. This enraged our youth and they too abused the Bajrangdal activists. Meanwhile inspector Ganapaty who arrived on the spot, straightaway went on abusive mode and tried to break into the church premises. When police could not do so, they lobbed tear gas in. So we all ran far away from the spot while police started chasing us. Bajrangdal activists used this opportunity and entered the church premises and joined police in attacking us. Once in, police again lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and even fired in the air. We had no way than to quit the place. While some of them ran towards the school building, I went to my office and closed the door," she continued.

She further said that a little while later she heard some young women and nuns pleading the police not to hit them as they were praying and protesting silently.  But police did not care a bit to them and chased them. They came running near my office. I could not control myself. So I opened my office and took them in and then sent them to staff room and toilets and closed the doors of my office. But police were not relenting. They started banging my office doors repeatedly. Finally I decided to face them and opened the doors and sat on my chair. Police who came in asked me as why was I in the school. I said them that it was a working day for us and we were not given permission to close down our school. I even remained them that our schools had been issued notices for closing down the schools on August 29 in protest of attacks of Christians in Orissa. Before they left the place, police smashed the glass on my table and also broke a pen stand and a few other things which were on my table. They asked me to leave the place immediately. Since I had no other way, I left the office taking the school keys with me. On my way back to convent however, I was worrying about the young girls and women who were inside the staff room and toilets. Though I tried to call a few of them on their mobile, once I reached convent, their mobile phones were switched off.

Meanwhile police went up to the third floor where some of the women and nuns had gathered in a room. Almost seven police broke open the door, went in and started beating up the women as they came out.

A few of the women suffered injuries in event. While parishioner Gretta Gomes sustained a deep wound on her back just below the shoulder, our elderly 71-year-old Sr Denitia was beaten badly on her back, thighs and hips. Even Sr Selma who is diabetic sustained injuries and has been admitted to Fr Muller hospital. Two young nuns (they are under training and study) were beaten up. One of the police even pulled the sari of one of them. It was such a dastardly and shameful act. I even feel ashamed to repeat these things, she added.

However, amidst all this chaos, no one noticed Bajrandgal activists getting near the church and pelting stones.  While everyone was running helter-skelter, Bajrangdal activists were pelting stones at our youth. Enraged by this, our youth too pelted stones and bottles. On the one had police were caning them and on the other hand, Bajrangdal activists were pelting stones at them. So they had no other way than defending themselves in the same way. When some of our youth ran over the terrace to protect themselves, Bajrangdal youth too chased them, went to the terrace and started pelting stones at police and people from them. They even picked tiles and threw them down. I don't say that our youth were not there on terrace. But there were Bajrangdal youth who were picking the tiles and pelting both at police and people.

On the other hand, police led by inspector Ganapaty went to the church. They were not allowed to go inside the church by the assistant parish priest and lay leaders. He asked them handover at least 25 youth to them. But the assistant parish priest said that not only 25 youth, but all are ready to come with him. But inspector Ganapaty rejected this, asked priest to allow him to go inside so that he can pick 25 youth from inside. But when priest did not bow down, he ordered lathi charge. Even when people came out peacefully and surrendered themselves, police beat them up severely. Once anyone raises his hands in surrender, he cannot be assaulted. But the police here had forgotten that they were human and they were dealing with human beings.

Today I met National Commission for Women president Girija Vyas and presented my views. I also met minority commission, former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge who all came to the school. I even spoke to senior Congress leader Prathviraj Chauhan over the phone through Kharge's cellphone and explained him our ordeal, she concluded.

Another woman who did not want to reveal her name and who has sustained a deep injury on her back owing to police caning almost had similar account to present. “We initially thought that we had only to fight against Bajarangdal. But we were wrong. We had police who were behaving worse than Bajarangdal activists with women and young girls. We are pained more by mental scars than physical wounds.  We were protesting within the premises. But the police led by inspector Ganapaty entered the church premises by breaking the lock, lobbed tear gas and started caning us.  Since our eyes were burning owing to tear gas, we were going in search of water to wash when police chased us. We went up the third floor, got into the only room that was open. But it did not have latch from inside. So we kept a table across the closed doors. But 7 policemen entered the room by pushing the table. We pleaded them not to cane us and when we started coming out, they hit us left and right without even bothering as where would we be hurt. I sustained injury on my back while a few nuns and young girls too sustained injuries. When they were faced with camera, police behaved as if they were not caning women. But in reality they caned us inside the rooms where we hid ourselves.

Mangalore: Girija Vyas Brings Police Brutality to the Light

Mangalore, Sep 17: Police Brutality on women came to light when several women started speaking openly with Girija Vyas when she visited a group of Christian women.

It was depressing to learn that Nuns who are aged above 60 were not even spared by the DK Police who securedt the order from higher authorities to Lathi Charge the mob.

Many women who were protesting against the attack at Milagres Chapel were caned and shown the stick by the Police.

When daijiworld contacted higher Police authorities  in Mangalore, they denied that Police were so cruel in their act. He said that,' Police tried their best to avoid the women and children. But some men, specially the youth who were extremely violent and there was no other way to control the mob and  during the canning some women might have become the victims' he said.

Vyas, who was unhappy with the state Government and especially with the Home ministry, speaking to daijiworld.com correspondent said, that this issue will be addressed to the Human Rights Forum. She said that, first time she is witnessing such a cruel attitude and action by the Police especially on women. 'Police forgot humanity"  she expressed sadly.

A lady, requesting her name not to be published told daijiworld that, she has seen police breaking the windows of vehicles in order to get a strong reason to rectify heavy canning. "I have seen in my own eyes that police were acting like agents of Bajarang Dal. It is sad, it is very sad and there is no protection for us, specially minorities'. She lamented.

Dear Home Minister, Dr.Acharya, this is the time for you to garner the courage to take stern action against all those who were involved in attacking/damaging christian worship places. Don't keep quiet by saying that mistakenly churches were attacked by the miscreants.

Suspend/sack those policemen who have brutally assaulted faithful, selfless nuns at Kulsekar and other places, who are always engaged in educating our childrens and spend rest of the time in prayers and other innocent christians who were agitating against injustice done to them.

I appeal to you to be exemplary leader of our district with your right decision to punish the culprits including police goondas and thereby show justice to the people whom you are representing. Vande Matharam.

We had seen such brutal pictures of inhuman act being enacted by the police in UP and Bihar. Thanks to the first BJP government in south india we have a situation wherein the silent protestors were assaulted upon. The police very well knew that the women and nuns in the church were there to protest the attacks silently and were not involved in pelting stones at the police but still they were brutally beaten. The most remarkable comment by the honourable CM BSY is the Government does not have any proof against Bajrangdal to arrest Mahendra Kumar even after he owned up for the attacks on the churches in the media. what a joke!!! This proves that the Bajrangdal and BJP are hand in glove. At least now the CM has proof of atrocities committed by the police on the women and nuns. will any action be taken against them? Thanks to Mr BS Yediurappa you have succeeded in muddying the waters of DK. It may take a long time before these scars heal.

It is unbelievable that those who came to protect the people went on a rampage and rioting. they had all the equipment - sticks, tear gas shells, protective head gears and shields. what did people have? just bare hands !may be a few young men picked up some stones.

Surely police and their masters knew that surely? Who will book the police men for brutalising the unarmed people in the place of worship - lathi charge and tear gas? They say they had to control the mob? was the mob fighting each other among themselves that the police had to intervene? How can anyone justify these acts of blatant brutality which is there for the whole world to see? How can a police force return to a church (permannur) the following day because some boys threw some stones at them, and vandalise the church? break doors, glasses, windows, images... just plain riot? Any one can still justify? the auhority cannot see it? And a police force just beating up women, children, nuns mercilessly? What were they upto going after them to cane them? It is just impossible to imagine that such a thing can happen?

We live in the middle east and daiji team covered all that is happening in our loving & peaceful native diocese, the Mangalore Diocese.

My brothers and sisters in Christ flocked to the church to safe guard the sanctity, peace and solidarity to our religion with the strength of the Holy Spirit and in the name of Jesus. This does not mean that our brothers and sisters are the easy catch to the police brutality.

I condemn this to the core. It is really the terrorist act of the police to beat especially the weaker sectors like children, ladies and nuns and I cannot bear to see the pictures captured by the daiji team.

No we cannot accept this. Lert us all again unite to get our brothers and sisters released from the charges / lock up at the earliest. Let us pray for the unity, peace and love and mercy of Jesus to flow in our beautiful city.

All those people who were involved in the recent attacks in Mangalore on Christian religious worship places and on Christian people are not Hindus. I don’t believe Bajrangies, VHP and RSS people are Hindus, in my opinion they are sick and mentally retarded people.

I am a Hindu but I don’t feel ashamed to tell this. I condemn this shameful act by Bajrangies, VHP and RSS people. I am a Hindu and I firmly believe a true Hindu would never involve himself doing such nasty thing. These Bajrangies, VHP and RSS people are born in Hindu families but don’t practice Hinduism at all.

I strongly feel central government should ban these organizations like they banned SIMI. A true Hindu will never attack on Christians because they are one of a kind people (god fearing and peace loving) Christian have done a lot for the society particularly in DK, Udupi and other parts of Karnataka and India as a whole.

I tell my Hindu brothers those who are associated with Bajrangies, VHP and RSS to get well soon. No god will forgive you for damaging holy place or beating women. It is better you ask forgiveness from these people before asking forgiveness from God.

Shame on India, shame on Orissa, shame on Mangalore and all the participants: politicians, BJP, Bajrang Dal, RSS, etc. Shame on the lot of you. And there were some who thought that India should be a member of the G-8 and the UN Security Council.

I question that if this is the way that Law & Order are addressed in the country. Read Karan Thapar's article(Hindustan Times) to understand how a true Hindu, Muslim, Christian or whatever should conduct themselves in the matter of the alleged conversions etc. With this type of behaviour, India could be delegated to the ranks of Rwanda, Somalia, or Eritrea. Shame, shame, shame on all you so called politicians, police, community leaders, participants where these atrocities have occurred, because you have shamed a great country's reputation for kindness, humanity, and culture. I would like to answer few questions. First of all why police are behaving so rude? Are they prompted by the Govt to do so ? Answer is a firm No. Let me explain few things.

Don’t think police are saviors of public. Whenever riot is there they want to save themselves from the rioting public. If you target police when they are in enough numbers they don’t leave u to go scot free. By chance if you escapes from them then they will target your protectors, family so on. This is what happened in Mangalore.

I would like to recall an incident few years back happened. A Police SI of Urwa police station(Mr. Hasatty)  has been murdered by few youths. Within few days those miscreants eliminated from the earth without facing the system of Judiciary. Police called it as suicides.

Bajarangis are smart enough, They didn’t made police as target. That’s why they went scot free. If time comes they will enter temples, mosque, house no matter what it is. The only criteria is police must outnumber the protesters or miscreants. When they are in uniform they don’t think about humanity, respecting women and how to behave with senior citizens. The thing is they are not trained properly how to behave with protestors & public. By the way I am not supporting their deeds. But this is the fact.

Without knowing or support of BJP govt, these Bajrangies (back bone of BJP) cannot attack at a time more than 50 Churches in all over Karnataka. BJP govt is going to celebrate their 150 days achievements as "OPERATION CHURCH". This is one of their hidden agenda, it was already pre-planned by RSS leaders.

They have already succeeded in "OPERATION KAMALA" & "OPERATION RAITHA" (by killing innocent farmer). Yediyurappa don’t have courage to call judicial enquiry on this "OPERATION CHURCH", he is worrying of his vote bank ( bajrangi/RSS) may get angry or may oppose him.

That is the reason Yadiyurappa arguing only against ''conversion'. Last year ( before formation of govt) Yadiyurappa was one of the "bajrangi", then how he can take action against his colleague. God only knows what they are going to do their 200 days achievements "OPERATION …………". OH GOD PLEASE SAVE KARNAKATA PEOPLE FROM BJP'S "OPERATION" success…

I strongly condem the attacks on the women and nuns. It is not the first time that police have showed their true colours. If action is not taken against them now, then these things will continue in the future. I request the press to highlight these wrong doing of the police and bring them to task. The Kadri police inspector Ganapathi should be treated in the same way as he treated the women and nuns. So should the police who have used their canes on the women. From this it is clear that the police are nothing but cowards and they can be compared to criminals. Please do something where these so called protectors of the people get punished for the wrong doing. It is clear that the police support the Bajrang dal /VHP. So why do we have to keep quiet.

Shame on you guys if you cant help the poor and needy don't stop those who are bringing up your own brother en there are thousands of Hindu and Muslims who studied in Catholic Schools and they are very successful in their life they are grateful. I totally agree with Roshan Pais. It is not the love of community that bring all the Congres leaders flocking down to Mangalore. I wholeheartedly condemn the attack of last Sunday. But giving a scope for our dirty politicians to take advantage of the situation is equally worse.

Attack on any religious communities or places of worship should be condemned. But showing extra love towards certain communities shows the hidden agenda behind it. It is easy to blame the police for atrocities. At the same time we need to put ourselves in their shoes to see how we would have reacted.

A mob is a mob. It knows no rules and regulations. Exhibiting wounds to garner sympathy will not be an excuse for the wrong done by the people who were throwing stones on police. There are 4 to 5 policemen who are wounded seriously. But which media will give publicity to these people who are still in the hospital.

A wrong is a wrong and it applies to all. If nuns and women are humans so are police. I saw the video footage where police were trying to make the ladies understand. But they went on arguing. That was not the time to indulge in all niceties.

Every morning when I used to read Udayavani I observed something very peculiar and that is the extra supplement that comes with Udayavani mostly relating to local news always carried pictures and articles of Nuns going house to house and educating people to prevent Chikunya and distributing medicines as prevention. I asked my mother why these nuns are doing this job and came the reply "Who else will". True we need good leaders but not who are inactive and those who dont perform. Ultimately they should serve the entire state people irrespective of religion or community from which they come from. Other wise they become extinct. Secondly lets not treat our community leaders on higher pedestal - we have elected them and they should be there for us . I think the recent attacks on christians in mangalore made us re think about a number of issues. although these incidents are sad and painful, they were eye openers. These incidents have taught us few lessons like,

    1. no matter how developed we are we lack political power. we have a number of business men, top industrialists, leaders but during a situation like this all this does not help. what matters is political power and leaders which we lack.

2.it also tells us each one of us must cast our vote during elections to beat the communal parties. During last assembly election i read only 45% christians voted. we cant expect secular parties to win by this type of laziness. together with other minorities and a lot of fellow Hindu's who do not support communal parties we can make the difference.

    3. we need a strong christian front- to lead us during situations like this. be it catholic sabha or CYM or any group. some one should take lead.

    4. not only we have less political leadres from our community but we do not support the few who are trying to come up.

He has taught us to be patient, kind, gentle, good, joyful, loving, peaceful and have self control ( Gal 5:22). Therfore let us practice what Jesus practiced, to be humble till death. Even if they destroy our churches, statues, blessed sacrament, buildings, furniture and property we will not protest in a violent way. Tell our youth not to be emotional. We will silently protest. We will pray for them in the way Jesus prayed " Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do". Jesus lives for ever. People from all community will realize the fact and root cause of all issues and make themselves a better person for tomorrow and make a better tomorrow. Remember truth always comes out at the end and if you are not punished by law definitely all those who involved in doing wrong will be punished by GOD.

Thank you Daijiworld for giving the world first hand information about the brutal treatment meted out by the police. This is the only medium i think through which mangloreans and world citizens could come to know the sorry state of affairs and the partisan treatment by police. It is a shame that the police are justifying their actions when videos show the polie mercilessly caning women inside the church. What right do the police have to entera place of worship. Will they dare to enter a temple or a mosque like that?

Catholics from all over the world should do all the efforts to ban the Bajrang Dal throughout India. Until and unless bajrang dal banned we shouldn’t reopen any Catholic schools, colleges, hospitals and other organization. Praying for these kinds of people is useless who know who don’t know what humanity is! If we are successful in banning BD I think we can survive as Catholics in India. India doesn’t need any terrorist group called Bajrang Dal to attack innocents. For attacking our innocent people we should make them to pay this time! Treat us like human beings. Don’t beat us like animals! This is the time to join the hand and fight back! Let’s do it!

It's really heart wrenching to see the sisters with wounds. No one can justify this brutality. It seems police are more cruel than Bajarangees. We always be indebtful to the Catholic Missionaries for their selfless service. You people are in our hearts & minds. God Bless us.

Where are the Christian leaders (religious/political). They do not have a right to raise a voice against this GOONDA POLICE FORCE of Mangalore?
