Karavali Ale Editor B V Sitaram Arrested in Udupi

The Hindu

Udupi, Jan 5: The police on Sunday arrested the director and chairman of Chitra Publications Pvt. Ltd. B.V. Seetaram near Karkala in Udupi district in connection with an old case.

Seetharam told The Hindu that he was travelling from Kateel in Dakshina Kannada to Kundapur in Udupi district via Karkala, when five or six police vans chased his car and stopped him.

He said: “The police said that I was under arrest. Nearly 25 policemen surrounded me. But they did not produce any arrest warrant. I demanded an arrest warrant. Then, they sent a policeman to the Shirva police station to get the warrant. I am made to appear as if I am a habitual offender. My wife is also with me. The case in which they have arrested me is a two-year-old defamation case. The case had earlier been dealt by the Sessions Court and it had been then found that my name and designation were not properly written. Now, they are arresting me in the same case. They only want to harass me and humiliate me. I would not be surprised, if I am killed in a police encounter,” Seetaram said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Karkala Sub-division Santhosh Kumar said that Seetaram was being arrested in connection with an old case registered at a police station in Shirva village in Udupi district.

“We will produce Seetaram before the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Udupi. Seetaram’s wife is also with him. We offered to provide a car for her,” he said.

Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) A.R. Infant said he had asked the Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) A.M. Prasad to look into the matter.

His information was that there was a non-bailable warrant pending against Seetaram.

If the protectors of law become lawless, what will be the future of this state ? Indeed they may have a vendetta against Mr. Sitaram for his Newspaper. It has exposed injustices against minorities with admirable candor and clarity on many occasions.

25 cops to arrest just an unarmed man? Is he a terrorist? Even to nab a hardcore terrorist 25 police personnel don't go. Just four days ago I saw a news article in the Daijiworld showing the pictures of an arrested government employee, who was involved in Rupees 73 lakh forgery case. In the pictures I did not see more than one police who had handcuffed the criminal. As Abdulla Madumoole rightly said, rogues are misusing their power in the State.

I do not know the depth or authenticity of the case. But it is strictly condemnable the way they have arrested a person without producing an arrest warrant when the police first encountered Mr. Seetharam, who also runs a newspaper.

I am deeply shocked and surprised at the arrest of Mr. B.V. Seetharam. How dare nearly 20 Police people running after him to arrest this gentleman. He is not a Criminal or a terror. He should be released and given damage for insulting him with his wife. I know Mr. B.V. and I have met him few years ago in his office and found him as an honest person. Today no value for honesty in India. Politicians have become the dirtiest specially during the elections. We need an Army controlled government. I am sad the way it is happening in India and attacking Christians, Muslims and Dalits by the high cast people. Castism should be abolished in India. Untouchablness should be vanquished. Let the blind eyes of politicians be open atleast now otherwise India will soon be doomed.

Police serving masters only, WHOEVER rules the state. (Congress/BJP), Not the public. Police reforms are required immediately as it is old from the times of BRITISH regime, where masters first rest is next !!.

This is the price one has to pay for fighting for justice. The more the govt. machinery harasses the Editor, the more he will be tough.  Karavali Ale has become detrimental to the interest of present state government.

Police had non-bailable warrant against B V Seetharam, so they are just implementing court order. Why blame them when they are doing their job or is media above everything? I pity the person at Shirva who was victim of Karavali Ale. He was portrayed as rapist so he filed defamation suit. BVSee did not bother to respond so today he is under arrest with NBW.

Devilish rule at its peak. The insane leadership of the state is openly challenging the public. Nothing surprising, they are doing as expected. What better can we expect from this goonda raj? If the victim himself is arrested, is it not the height of arrogance? This makes me feel that democracy in India is a farce. Any buffoon can get elected and later can claim that he has majority support for all his moronic actions. Democracy is not suitable for India as long as Indians behave in such a immatured way of ing rogues into power.
