Mangalore, Jan 29: Women belonging to Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane (JMS) and students belonging to the National Students Union of India and Students Federation (SFI) staged a protest here on Wednesday January 28, against the attack on women by members of the Sri Rama Sena.
Women and students in unison, urged the government to enforce a ban on Sri Rama Sena. Indian culture always respects women, but Sri Rama Sena which projects itself as a saviour of Indian culture, has been attacking women and thrashed the women who on their own will wanted to enjoy their leisure time," said K S Laxmi, state president of JMS, addressing the protestors in front of the office of the deputy commissioner(DC), Dakshina Kannada district here.
"Sri Rama Sena does not have the right to beat up women and it is not authorized or entitled to teach the women what to do and what not to, said Ramani, one of the leaders of JMS.
The protestors also urged the concerned to take strict action against the Sena and accused it of unleashing thugs to launch attacks on the women.
Students come out of classes:
The students who came out of their classes, joined the protestors in front of DC office. The protest was organized by NSUI and SFI.
Addressing the protestors, Thejaswiraj, president of NSUI said, that the Sena activists have donned the roles of Talibanis, by trying to push their own agenda on the youths. The Sena people would do well to turn their attention to solve other problems the society is facing, which will help in developing the society, he advised.
Leeza, a student said, that women need to be treated as equals. "There was a time when the women used to sit in a corner of the home and was treated like a servant. Now, things have changed, and the present-day women do not like to be relegated to that position. We will not give in to partisan and derogatory treatment. We neither subscribe to nor tolerate what the Sena says or wants. The state government should take stringent action against the perpetrators of the attack, so that such attacks do not recur in future," said Jeevan, SFI president.
The Sena activists do not like the idea of the students and youngsters freely mingling with each other, overlooking religious affiliations, said another student who addressed the protestors.
The NSUI and SFI had given a call for the college bundh on Wednesday January 28, but the college administrations did not allow for the same. So the colleges went ahead with conducting classes for those who were present.
