Mangalore, Feb 26: Former President of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam mesmerized students with his teachings, words of wisdom, and brilliant answers, at an interactive session held at the Corporation Bank Millennium Building Hall on Wednesday February 25.
The programme on the subject ‘Me and My Society’ was organized by the district administration. About 100 students from 20 schools participated in the event and 10 children also got the opportunity to pose questions to Dr Kalam.
The former President told the students to dream and wished them luck in all their endeavours. He questioned the children as to what their dreams were and said that they should dream big.
Dr Kalam said, “I had three dreams in my life with vision, mission, and realization—the Agni missile, Pura projects, and a powerful India”. He also mentioned his primary school teacher Shivasubrahmniam Aiyar, scientists Vikram Sarabhai, and Sathish Dhawan as his role models in response to a question.
Dr Kalam began his speech with the question “How many of you want to be doctors, engineers, and scientists?” He talked of peace, knowledge, creativity, and courage.
He exhorted the students to be prepared to meet the challenges that they would face in 2020 when India would be an economically-developed nation.
Dr Kalam deftly fielded all questions by students be it on the development of India or science or eradication of terrorism and poverty.
When one of the students asked Dr Kalam for his autograph and a picture with him, to which the latter replied that this would be unfair to the other students present there and insyead asked the student to visit his website.
He told the students to be leaders; a leader who observes failure and problems. Responding to yet another question, Dr Kalam said that he had helped create missiles because it was an indication of strength and because ‘strength respects strength’.
Deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj welcomed the gathering while K Rama Murthy from Corporation Bank honoured Dr Kalam.
