Puttur, Dec 16: Puttur has been emerging as an important city and with that, the number of crimes, theft etc have been increasing in the recent past. Even though thefts of things including cars are happening in broad daylight, the police personnel have been failing to crack the cases. Although a number of CCTV cameras have been installed at various places to stop such crimes, many of them are not working properly. Therefore, it has been decided to fix CCTV cameras all over the city in order to detect cases like thefts, hit and run cases etc.

In Dakshina Kannada district after Mangaluru, Puttur has been growing into an urban centre. With the growth of the city, the number of crimes has also been increasing.

CCTV cameras have been installed all over the city for the specific purpose of detecting the accused when such cases happen. But regrettably, only some of these cameras work. Because of improper maintenance, the cameras have become as good as non-existent.

During the last one month, four cars were stolen by thieves during the day. Even though the spots where thefts happened were located in the city, because of improper CCTV cameras, the police have found it very hard to find the thieves. Besides, on the highway often unknown vehicles hit two-wheelers or light vehicles before speeding away with impunity. In these cases too, it is found hard to detect the criminals. in the light of these things, it has been decided to install CCTV cameras all over the city with private participation at government cost.

Puttur city has CCTV cameras in about 60 spots. Out of them, 46 were provided by the city municipality and police department. 14 have been installed with private support. But half of these cameras are not functioning in a proper way. Specifically, the cameras installed with private participation have become useless because of non-maintenance. The CCTV cameras, if they are kept in good condition, can also help in maintaining the city clean as action can be taken against those who dispose of waste in prohibited areas.
