Kasargod, Jul 12: Central and state intelligence, as well as the National Investigation Agency, have accessed the information that Al-Qaeda, which has spearheaded a series of destructive and ruthless activities all over the world, had recently remitted six crore rupees to Kerala state for funding fundamentalist activities here. The funds so remitted are meant for training trusted lieutenants and for fuelling disturbances and riots in the state, they have learnt.
This information came into the open during the raids conducted by the policemen on the houses of some leaders of a politically organization in the state, relating to the chopping off of a palm of T J Joseph, lecturer of a college, at Muvattupuzha. The funds were disbursed through middlemen in a clandestine and clever manner, and a lion’s share out of these funds has gone to Ernakulam and Kollam districts on Malabar Coast, it has been found. The entire amount represents ‘advance’ for disruptive activities, with promises of making further payments depending on the ‘performance’ of the concerned.
The middleman handling the money trafficking operations have been picked up on the basis of their reliability and loyalty. A separate team looks after the work of making cash remittances in the form of parcels. After the people got wind that the policemen have been after them, it is learnt that the concerned have started refusing parcels being delivered by strangers.
The policemen gained access to much of this information through the CDs recovered by them from the house and car owned by Kunhimonu, a resident of Aluva. State director general of police, Jacob Punnoose, who visited the spot where the incident of chopping off of the palm had occurred, said that this incident was backed by elaborate planning and deft execution. Investigations brought to the fore the fact that the concerned were given rigorous training for the perfect execution of cutting of limbs on the lines witnessed in Al-Qaeda attacks, the agencies have discovered.
It is surprising that the Kerala police had no inkling that such a large mafia was operating within the state since long. The intelligence officials were taken unawares, when they started realizing the gravity of the situation. The policemen now hope to get to the bottom of the operations and bust the entire network, with the help of other intelligence agencies. The operatives of Al-Qaeda appear to be using Kerala as a laboratory for their experiments and to strengthen their network, tentacles of which they hope to spread to other neighbouring states in course of time, it is being analyzed.
In connection with the severing of a palm of T J Joseph, a college lecturer, at Todupuzha in the state a few days ago, the policemen have arrested three more persons. The men now arrested are said to include a man, who had provided Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card to the accused.
The arrests were made on Sunday July 11. One among them is the owner of a mobile shop in Kotamangala in Ernakulam district, who is charged with providing SIM card to an activist of an organization, and activating it, without verifying the identification records. The holder of the SIM, who used it at Aluva, Paravoor, Kotamangala etc., is the prime accused in the above case. A case has been registered against the agent of the mobile company concerned too, it is gathered.
The policemen, who raided the houses of a few activists of Popular Front of India, recovered a few SIM cards, some fake identity cards and other incriminating documents, it is gathered. Two accused arrested earlier in this connection, are in judicial custody.
