Udupi, Oct 6: For the first time in Karnataka, house-to-house census of the status of sanitation in the district has been undertaken. Under the census, 2.41 lac houses spread over 155 villages of the district will be visited by teams from October 2 to 12. Based on the report so collected, plans to improve the sanitation are proposed to be drawn up.

A detailed report including the presence of toilets, leach pits etc will be prepared. For this purpose, 800 census enumerators have been deployed at the rate of four per thousand population and training has been imparted to them. They will pose questions about personal usage of toilets, method of disposal when the leach pit is full, waste sorting and disposal at the family level, management of effluents etc.

The people will be educated about the creation of soak pits to dispose of contaminated water, creation of nutritional gardens to manage wet waste, earthworm unit, manure pit construction etc. Information will also be given about providing clean drinking water round the year under the Jaljeevan Mission’s Mane Mane Gange scheme. Details of houses without water connection are obtained and they are helped to get tap connection. Importance of twin pits, manual scavengers act, wet waste management method, dry waste management, menstrual cycle waste disposal, need to dispose of grey water etc are taught. People are given printed booklets with the QR codes which can be scanned through the phone and video giving information can be viewed.

Dr Naveen Bhat, chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, said that this report will help the district to achieve complete sanitation and to convert it into a totally hygienic district.
