Former Chief Editor of Taranga Santhosh Kumar Gulwadi Passes Away

Mangalore, Dec 7: Santhosh Kumar Gulwadi, well-known writer and former editor of popular Kannada periodical magazine 'Taranga' passed away here on Tuesday December 7 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 72.

He was the first chief editor of Taranga and continued in the post up till 1996. He is considered the main force behind the magazine's success. With his innovative journalism, he was able to win the hearts of his readers and create a niche for himself and for the weekly.

He was honoured with the Alva's Nudisiri 2010 Award last month for his contributions to the field of journalism. He had been the recepient of several other awards. 

Among the many works by him are 'Tata Tingan,' a compilation of Konkani lullabies and 'Nanjunda Siri' a bilingual commemorative souvenir, felicitating M S Nanjunda Rao, edited by Gulwadi.

He also published a book of Konkani poetry and several books for children.

    Very innovative person. I still remember 20 years back when he was Editor of Taranga Dr. T M A Pai Foundation organised a Workshop for Konkani Writers. Santosh Kumar Gulwady was director and of the worksop and H V Kamath coordinator. Na D'Souza , Dr. Ashok Pai were resource persons.Me , Maurice d'sa , Panchu bantwal , andrew l d cunha , ubbba moodbidri students then and , anita pinto , jessy padwal , Sr. Emiliana were participants.
    I met him last time when he came to Sahitya Academy Programme organised by Raknno Weekly.
    Salute to the departed soul of great man.

    A great loss to the indian journalism.. I still remember the days of my childhood when i used to wait for each edition of "Tharanga" to read the "Antharanga Bahiranga" column from Gulwadi. Sad that he had to leave "Tharanga", the baby which he brought up and join Vijaya karnataka a money minded news paper for some time, where he was not given enough recognition.

    Extremely sad news. Mr Gulwadi was the person who nurtured Taranga to a magazine that had statewide popularity. Under his editorship, Taranga was a treat to readers.

    Is very sad news that a great journalist,first editor of TARANGA passed away. I have never missed Taranga till he was running the show. Due to misunderstanding with Management and his departure from Taranga, I also lost interest in Taranga.

    Santhosh Kumar Gulvady was an Editor par excellence.He brought in
    a lot of innovative ideas in Kannada journalism.The advent of
    Taranga weekly was an instant hit
    because of Gulvadymam.He was a staunch supporter of Konkani language and culture.He penned a
    Konkani folklore book titled Tha Tha Thinganna.Respectful homage to
    the departed soul.

    I too share the same opinion as of Mr.harini, kavoor/mangalore that
    gulvadi,a great cartoon lover... Much of my cartoon creations were published during his tenure as editor of tharanga...In fact shri Gulwadi gave equal importance to cartoons as showed to articles and stories. May his soul rest in peace.

    Late Mr.SK Gulvadi carved a niche for Taranga and other publications of Manipal, when kannada literary world was dominated by Bangalore based Sudha and Mayura.

    My deep condolences to Mr. Gulvadi Family, he is a nice person. During 90's his job as an editor with Taranga made a new revolution in Kannada Saahithya Loka, because of misunderstanding with Udayavani Management, he has been removed from his job, which was very sad news. May his soul rest in peace..

    We deeply mourn Santhosh Kumar Gulwadi, well-known writer and former editor of popular Kannada periodical magazine 'Taranga' and offer heartfelt condolences.

    I vividly remember my meetings with him at his press office at Manipal and would like to share here that he has donated many kannada books to Dubai Karnataka Sangha's 'library'.
