Poem: Movie Stars of Yesteryear

June 6, 2026

Movie Stars of Yesteryear
Jab pyar kisi se hotha hai, a khayal comes to mind
Romancing with Dev Anand let’s go action rewind
The CID and Jewel thief was an awesome guide
Pocket Mar launched him to fame and he was glorified

Pyar hua Ikarar hua ek Raj Kapoor ke saath
The Tramp who loved Boot Polish also loved barsaath
Though his joota was Japani and patloon Inglistani
Jiska Naam tha ek Joker Uska dil tha Hindustani

This goofy stylish playboy who lived in China Town
Was a leading Ladies man even when he played the clown
A handsome Bhramachari – a Prem “Rogue” in his days
Shammi was our Junglee who set our hearts ablaze

Dil tadap tadap ke keh raha hai abhija
While Dilip Kumar whispered Pyar kiya to darna kya
Andaaz and Aan were superhits and so was Ram aur Shyam
The Mughal-e-azam Tragic King could dazzle with his charm

With his high-pitched yodelled voice that still reverberates
KishoreDa will go down as one of the singing Greats
With Eena Meena Deeka and my favourite Paanch Rupaiya
His melody and mischief deserve more than barah aana

Hysteric at his sight young girls would swear their Amar prem
Haathi mere Saathi won him fame and much acclaim
Mere jeevan saathi and Aradhana were the best
The sight of Rajesh Khanna gave fans cardiac arrest

Mera Gaon mera Desh mein sabka dil jeetha
Seeta aur Geetha ke saath romance bhi ho gaya
Jugnu, Dost, Sholay and movies like Yakeen
Proved that Garam Dharam was born for the silver screen

Khullam khulla pyaar karenge Chandni ke saath
Khel khel mein pakadh liya Neetu Singh ka haath
Love ke chakkar mein Rishi ka pyaar mein twist hua
Sagar jaisi aankhonwali – naam hai kya batha

Since Fauji Days we watched him right through Chak de India
Dil tho paagal hai was great and so was Mai hoon na
Kal ho na ho, Dear Zindagi, He said “My name is Khan”
SRK’s a superstar who’ll act jab tak hai jaan

Sholay and Sharabi, Anand and Abhiman
AB is endearing even when he’s eating paan
While I'm trying to be a "Shayer, but only for "Do pal"
Anthony Gonsalves is a legend – Aaj aur kal

Entertained by Superstars – Life was one joyride
Romancing all our heroes – we grew up starry-eyed
59 going 60 – I’m still lost in “khwab”
Singing “Kasme Vaade” with my favourite Amitabh
