Bantwal, April 3: A young man is suspected to have died of rabies here on Monday. The deceased was Prashanth Hegde, son of Ashok Hegde, resident near Punjalkatte primary health centre.

He was bitten by their pet dog three months ago but he did not obtain any treatment for it. He suffered from severe pain and fever for the last two days and he went to Punjalkatte primary health centre for treatment.

The doctors who examined him sent him to Mangaluru government hospital. But he died without responding to treatment. It is said that he would have survived had he taken treatment soon after the dog bite.

Though the reports from clinical tests indicated rabies, the exact cause of his death is not known, said district health officer Dr Kishore. It is feared that if he had indeed died of rabies, those who were in contact with him will have to take anti-rabies injections.

Prashanth is the eldest among two sons and was unmarried. He was a contract employee in the Jio organisation and was supporting his family.
