Mangaluru, Apr 5: Physiotherapy is often used to help recover motor function in individuals who are affected by disability, illness or injury. Neurorehabilitation is a specialist branch of physiotherapy dedicated to improving the function of patients who have suffered physical impairment caused by neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, Traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, Cerebral palsy, Bell’s Palsy and vertigo and many more.

Here at Institute of Physiotherapy, Srinivas University city campus, Pandeshwar, the Neurorehabilitation outpatient department (OPD) has always tried to maintain an impeccable record of comprehensive patient care, clinical teaching and training of students as well as contribute significantly to the scientific literature in terms of research.

 


Through our academic and clinical education, students develop a broad foundation of applying physiotherapy knowledge into assessment and management skills under “Clinical training.” The student will have the opportunity to take an initial or interim history, perform a focused neurologic examination and formulate a therapeutic plan. The student will also be involved in patient education. With the dynamic teaching of case studies, discussions, hands on demonstrations, projects and presentations, the department is committed to create excellence and expertise in academics, clinical settings and laying sound foundation for research. Students also receive hands on training at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital, Mukka by extremely skilled faculty.

The neuro department is also equipped with the latest sophisticated modalities such as Force plate, Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve conduction studies (NCS), Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP), Virtual reality, EMG Biofeedback and body weight support harness system for gait training. The students undergo training of handling these equipment and applying it on patients, learning the required knowledge and skills in par with International standards.

For patient benefits, the department includes hands on therapies, specific exercise prescription and a home exercise programme. Some people who require additional support and high levels of care undergo treatment with the specialised equipment available in the Neurorehabilitation OPD of Institute of Physiotherapy, Srinivas University, Pandeshwar.
