Bantwal, Jul 12: A woman committed suicide by setting fire to herself in Sangabettu village, here on Tuesday July 12. Along with her, she also set her toddler daughter ablaze.

The deceased have been identified as 23-year-old Mamata, wife of Jayant Shettigar, a resident of Gadipalke and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Khushi.

Mamata had bolted her room along with Khushi at about 10 am on Tuesday, when her father-in-law Nonayya Shettigar was away. She reportedly poured kerosene on her toddler and on herself and set both on fire. Nonayya rushed home when he heard the screams of the mother and the baby but could not open the door. Neighbours rushed to help and broke it open.

However, Mamata had breathed her last by then while Khushi was battling for life. Khushi died on her way to hospital.

Bantwal rural police rushed to the spot. The reason behind Mamata’s act is yet to be ascertained.

Tahsildar Vijay B P also paid a visit to the bereaved family.

It is always was and always will be Woman against Woman society and because of few the unscrupulous ones all will tarnished and generalized and finally in all such situation " Man" will take the blame! whereas in actual sense probably another woman was responsible for this situation.

Pls. do not criticise the dead persons. No one would like to kill themselves, particularly a mother killing self and her innocent child unless the grief was worst than hell. May their souls rest in peace.

What backlash is there not her own parents, relatives and community to her support and as far as police complaint is concerned once a woman gives complaint it is difficult for the inlaws to torture the woman they have to think twice before even touching her.

If it was her in laws troubling her she should have filed police complaint and made their lives miserable. she should not have committed suicide this only shows women are week and vulnerable,

Hats off to Mr. Rajesh & Mr. Saikiran Gopalakaje's comments. Only people with true conscience would make such wise comments. Women need to be respected. The treatement given by inlaws in most cases are unimaginable. A girl leaves her parents home to start a new life with a new set of people. As much as we love our girls to be well looked after by their inlaws why can't people understand that these innocent girls too are the pride and joy of some family. A woman's sacrifice can never be assessed by mankind. Maa Shakthi, Devi Maa, Bhagyalaxmi, Dhanalaxmi, Gruhalaxmi what all names for females but in truth she is the target for all kinds of torture, harassment and untold misery.

Some silently bear it for the honour of her family and some weak and unable to make it end their lives. This young girl set her little baby and herself on fire, maybe not right for most of us, no one knows the reason behind this act of hers, but let's think from her point of view how this little child would have been treated in her absence, hence she must of taken this extreme step. We can only pray for peace to the lost souls and strength for the family to bear the loss...

Whether it is murder or suicide nobody has the right to kill others or ownself. God is the giver of life and only God can take away our life. Foolish, selfish woman. Instead of wasting her life and her little baby's life, she should have done used the God's gift of life to do some constructive work atleast. Biggest sinner. I have neither any respect nor regards for her. She will be lingering in between hell and heaven forever.

It can happen to anyone in any family. The toughest of us can be vulnerable for stress, depression and mental ailments. And then logic of life alludes us.
If only people around her could read the signs for help maybe this tragedy could have been prevented.
Many of the insensitive comments do not care to know about the circumstances she must have been in before making judgements and similar society creates such cases.

Must have beeen in extreme stress, otherwise must have been mentally unstable ,...no mother would do this if she was in the right frame of mind . stop criticizing her. did any one ever find out her troubles??? she must have found no other way to kill herself and her baby. Mr ismail your women live under pathetic situations , do u men at least ask them for their needs .....

We men should respect women and their needs ... at 23 one and half yr child ??? must have been too much for her ???may be she wanted to wait for some time before having a child, men dont think of such consequences , married one month pregnant the next ... or must have bbeen weak but have to slog at husbands house, or may be she was unhappy with her husband , may be in love with someone else.. there could be many reasons , people who criticize here can u go personnally and solve every ones problems??? no idiot would die using fire..

It is basic human decency to condole the departed. I'm sure this mother's cry for help when she was in mental distress was not listened to by her own family and by the family she came to enrich. We (men) don't respect our women and don't take care of them as much as they care for us and our children. She might have thought what kind of life and future her daughter will have? And what right do we have to criticise her when as a society we fail when it comes to women's rights and well being.

She doesnt have the right to end her own life as life is a precious gift from God. NO doubt this is a merciless mother who killed her own child. She has no right to kill her child though shse gave her birth.......God shall punish her for killing herself and her own child.....Whatver may be the circumstances, she cant act like this....
