Beltangady, Jul 14: Puneet (18), who is suspected to have abetted suicide by his lover, Prajnalata (18), a resident of Kashibettu in Laila Pragatinagar in the taluk, has been arrested. The arrest was made by the local police.

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the mother of Prajnalata with the local police station on Monday, accusing Punit, whom Prajnalata was dating, of having a hand in her daughter’s death. Prajnalata and Punit, it is gathered, loved each other.

In her complaint, Geeta, mother of the ill-fated girl, said Punit used to inflict mental and physical harassment on her and her daughter often. She has claimed that Prajnalata, frustrated over Punit’s behaviour, consumed poison on June 29 at her home. She breathed her last in a hospital on July 9.

Punit was produced in the local court on Wednesday. He has been remanded to judicial custody till July 22.
