Udupi, Jun 17: The Indian Christian Union has welcomed the state government's decision to repeal the anti-conversion law.

State president Prashant Jathanna in a press statement said, “When the BJP was in power, it brought an anti-conversion law for their benefit. It was strictly opposed by our union. When this law came into force and the session took place, we conducted a hunger strike near Suvarna Vidhana Soudha of Belagavi for a day against the bill. The former minister of the government of Karnataka Shivaram Hebbar visited us and said that he will take into concern our appeal, but later the act was brought into force."

"Meanwhile, the then-opposition leader Siddaramaiah approached us and promised us that if the Congress comes to power in the next election, they will cancel the act and promote peace in the state. As promised, they have taken the decision to repeal the act. On behalf of Christians and the people of the state, Indian Christian Union is grateful to the state government," he said.
