Udupi, Jul 21: Department of Commerce, Manipal University organized Induction Day for the new batch of BBM (e banking & finance) at MIT Library auditorium, MIT Campus at Manipal here, recently.

Inaugurating the Induction Programme of department of Commerce, Praveen Suvarna, Country Head and executive vice president – Quality Assurance, Yes Bank Ltd, recalled his association with HDFC BANK, ABN AMRO, ICICI BANK and traced the evolution of the Indian Banking over the past 25 Years.

He explained the shift from Branch Banking to the Centralised Banking, where a customer of the branch is empowered to enjoy the benefits of the vast network of the entire bank. He also dwelt on the importance of Technology in the banking industry in particular.

He spoke about the exponential growth of Yes Bank in the Indian banking space. He exhorted the students to make the best use of the potential roles available in the banking industry leading to absorption of people with skills and expertise in diverse fields of knowledge.

Sudhakar Shetty, Dy general manager, Vijaya Bank, Mangalore addressed the gathering and recalled the contribution of South Canara District to the Banking Industry being the cradle of banking.

He also appreciated the role of Dr TMA Pai, Founder of Manipal University, who had brought about a revolution in the field of higher education and healthcare. He explained the transformation of Banking Industry from Brick and Mortar system to Electronic Banking System.

He emphasized the need for understanding the importance of customer service and explained the opportunities available today to the young generation in banking sector. He spoke about the importance of being mobile and its contribution in the career development and personal growth. He also spoke about the scope of banking in the public sector banks.

Sandeep Shenoy, head of department of commerce, thanked the chief guest and the inaugurator and called upon the students and parents to take best advantage of the opportunities available in Manipal University and enrich their knowledge.

He also appreciated the pioneering efforts of DR. TMA PAI, for the cause of upliftment of the masses by providing education and health care facilities.  He also emphasized the importance of monitoring the performance of the students by their parents by keeping in constant touch with the faculties/teacher guardians.  Varalakshmi A, Faculty, department of Commerce delivered the vote of thanks. Faculties from various constituent Institutions of Manipal University were present on the occasion.
