Mangaluru: Rain water connection to underground drainage leading to overflowing of manholes

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 14: Though there is facility for the rain water to flow, hundreds of houses and apartment complex buildings have connected their rain water pipes to the underground drainage (UGD) system. This causes manholes to overflow at several places in the city making the environment fill with foul odour.

Some house owners and apartment complex people have connected the rain water outlets to the underground drainage system to avoid waterlogging inside their premises.

The water from manholes overflows and ends up in houses in low-lying areas. In addition, the underground drainage processing units are receiving double the amount of sewage which makes their work difficult.

In and around Mangaluru, 22 wet wells are built including areas like Kudroli, Pandeshwar, Padil, Yekkur and Kottara Chowki. This means that the water from bathroom and washing basins is flowing into wetwell crossing the manhole through underground drainage. This goes to four STPs (Sewage Treatment Plant) built by the city corporation.

The sewage water is processed at 16 MLD capacity STP at Suratkal, 20 MLD STP at Jeppinamogaru, 44 MLD STP at Kavoor and 8.7 MLD at Pacchanady. Only the sewage water of this capacity is taken in by the processing STPs. If more water is received, then it develops back pressure which in turn overflows from the manholes.

Was the MCC and other authorities sleeping when large scale rainwater pipelines were being connected to UGDs? It's just impossible! The need of the hour is to stop any further multistorey constructions as the sloppy infrastructure is already crumbling and the Smart City would not be able to handle any further additional load on it's infrastructure!!

Rita, these drains are very old and should have been enlarged to cater to the burgeoning population of the city; over and above that people are draining rain water directly into the drains meant to carry sewage water!

We should only HOPE that this drainage water doesn't mix with DRINKING WATER. In Smart City Mangaluru, we see new apartments coming up in many places every day. The question is where does the drainage wastes from all these apartments go.?. We people are interested only in Caste Politics & Vote Banks. But, Nobody is bothered about Basic Infrastructure like Drinking Water, Drainage, Wet Wells, Rain Water Harvesting, Etc. We are in such a position we are ready to install water & air purifiers in our Homes, but we are never bothered about how to prevent this. If same thing continues, the Mangalorean's will pay the price for being so complacent.

Mangalore's population has surged by leap and bounds. The age old infrastructure is meagre with the populace of Mangalore and urgently needs to be enhanced. It is possible - but if there is a will, minus cheating as is being done by the extremely stingy, miserly, blood sucking, kanjoos makhichoos Mangalore City Corporation who do not even pay contractors like Antony Waste Management Cell Private Limited, which was handling solid waste of the city for the past eight years. It can be done within six months if there is a professional work ethics implemented .... without any hiccups.

End result is bribe given to MCC officials. Mostly it is builders and owners of palatial houses who are the culprits.

It is very pathetic state of affairs... Our cities are growing but our people have their mindsets glues to stone ages... Irresponsible disposal is not only limited to trash but also storm water... In UAE the municipality engineers do a proper check on what is called as FIC (First Inspection Chamber) which is the first UGD manhole from any building or villa... Storm water drains are separate... Learning curve never seems to have a full stop as we modernize....

Corruption is main cause for overflowing. There is no proper inspection from concerned officials. These corrupt officials take bribe and issue NOC and completion certificate to builders and individual house owners.

We forgot the basic requirements during the process of widening the roads and making Mangalore a smart city. If the issue is not taken seriously our generations will have to suffer unfortunately.
