Bangalore: Hectic Parleys in Karnataka BJP for New Leader

Bangalore, Aug 1 (IANS): Hectic parleys resumed Monday in the faction-ridden Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka to pick a new leader a day after scam-hit B.S. Yeddyurappa resigned as the party's first chief minister in south India.

With the BJP high command setting Wednesday (Aug 3) as the D-Day for the legislature party meeting to elect the new leader, the Yeddyurappa faction is harping on Lok Sabha member D.V. Sadananda Gowda, while the rival faction headed by party general secretary Ananth Kumar is backing Rural Development Minister Jagadish Shettar for the top post.

"The party's legislators are holding discussions with their leaders and cadres for a consensus candidate. Efforts are on to resolve the differences between the factions for a unanimous choice. We hope all the legislators and leaders will cooperate," the party's state unit president K.S. Eshwarappa told reporters here.

Though party's central observers Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh left for New Delhi late Sunday after failing to resolve the deadlock, Dharmendra Pradhan, who is in charge of the party's affairs in the state, held talks with Kumar, Eshwarappa, Shettar and scores of lawmakers at a star hotel in the city to seek their opinion.

At the same time, Yeddyurappa's supporters, including Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya, Excise Minister Renukacharya and Housing Minister V. Somanna met at the former's residence and decided to rope in more legislators to back Gowda, who represents the Chickmaglur-Udupi parliamentary constituency, about 400 km from here.

"There is no change in our stand. We want Gowda to be the next chief minister, as he is the choice of our leader (Yeddyurappa). We hope other legislators will also support him," Renukacharya said.

Claiming majority support to Gowda, the Yeddyurappa faction has decided to camp its 40-50 odd legislators at a posh resort on the city outskirts to prevent poaching by the rival faction, which is backing Shettar, who represents Hubli assembly segment, about 400 km from here.

Clarifying that he was not in the contest as he was not an aspirant to the top post, Eshwarappa said as the party's state unit president he would hold talks with both factions to explore for a consensus candidate.

"We are confident of resolving the differences to form the new government as the people have given the ruling party mandate to govern for five years. We still have another 22 months to go before the next assembly elections. The opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular, which have been trying to break our party will not succeed. They have to wait till 2013," Eshwarappa asserted.

According to Home Minister R. Ashoka, the rival factions are being wooed with an offer of a deputy chief minister post for electing the new leader.

In the 225-member state legislative assembly, the ruling BJP has 120 members, including speaker, while the Congress has 71, the JD-S 26, six are Independents, one nominated member and one seat is vacant.

The BJP will require 113 for a simple majority to win a confidence motion when it forms its second government in the state.

THE GURU, Mangalore: Thank you for
reading my comment. In India, politians of ALL PARTIES have made
a lot of money through different
avenues. Some have made a whole
    lot than the rest.

Wherever the BJP came into power,
    their main political agenda was
to scare the minorities, especially the Christians. The
Congress led and other party led
    governments in India, except the
    BJP led governments have not
    bothered the Christian minority.

Can you please explain, why since BJP came into power, Karnataka became
the no 1 state in the nation to
    attack the Churches, prayer halls
    and poor believers? In every
state where BJP came into power,
    this anti-religious action was
    undertaken with the indirect moral
support of the BJP. For BJP,
social and economic uplift of the
poor was far less important than
    terrorizing the minorities for
    political gains. Sir, please
don't misunderstand me, I am simply
speaking out for the right of all
human beings to have their own
political and religious faith. When we try to overtake it through
our sheer majority and strength, then
    God almighty will interfere with
that someway. I don't belong to
any political party in India, and
have not given a dollar to any of
them. If an HINDU is discriminated
or bothered by an American of any
color or faith, I will stand with the HINDU
and fight for him or her to the
    best of my strength.

on an average the dakshin kannada people are much more sincere and less corrupt (excusing rotten eggs like kalmadi ). but the gowdas, lingayats and reddys have made our once upon a time decent karnataka a hell to live. we need to do something..but what ? is the question. why dont erstwhile leaders and businness men of d.k take over, form a new party ? im sure we can steer and get back the lost glory of our state.

MR. GANESH: What you have said is
    absolutely correct. The BJP never
    had any political manifesto with
an economic and social agenda to give a better
life for the people of India. Their major agenda was creating a political upheaval specifically targeting the minorities, thus creating false emotional vibrations in the hearts of the
    uneducated masses of people. The
    leaders found something highly
    profitable to make themselves rich
very fast and they could accomplish
that faster than the rest of
    the non-BJP politicians. Let us
hope that the citizens of India
might have learned the big lesson
    by watching the Karnataka political
    circus played during the last
    three years.

My one question to all BJP leaders and its supporters: BJP came in power and their main promise was Hinduism. They talked a lot about against Christians, Muslims, and other religions. They attacked non-Hindu faith worship places and their leaders. In all they showed all the real color of their attitude. Now Mr. Yeddi is gone and they can not fix the problems and they are suffering.

They are calculating the people in upper cast, lower cast, Gowda, or Reddy and all. But all these people are belonging to Hindu population. Why BJP and its groups are forcing this type of influence. Why they can not think in a better way to a good leader? In all, these people are fooling every citizen and BJP is always supporting only upper cast Hindu population.

To be frank, the way Yeddi behaved in his last days of glory after all his ‘open secrets and ill-gotten wealth’ was exposed, it is doubtful if anyone in Karnataka has any hope from the BJP and it’s ‘disciplined-highly corrupt’ leaders.

However, for the sake of those who voted the BJP in the last elections from the coastal district, it would be good if DVS will become the CM, ideally without the backing of shameless crooks like Yeddi, Renukcharya, Sommana, Dhananjay Kumar, Reddy clan..etc.

DVS can then provide the much needed new concrete-asphalting and repairing of all roads in Puttur and Bantwal taluk’s (I am sure he has personally travelled on the death-defying narrow pot hole infested road from Puttur to Vitla) apart from a safe and travel worthy highway to Bangalore via Hassan. Compared to Karnataka, the inner city roads in Kerala are always in brand new condition.

After so many decades and dozens of politicians from all parties in power from Dakshina Kannada, it is a tragedy that all have made a fortune overnight but none have even thought of helping the people from Dakshina Kannada district.

I hope our district Sadananda Gowda will get CM berth. So that we can expect some developments in our udupi and DK districts. The important one being the super fast rail connectivity between coastal districts and our capital. The completion of Hassan-Bengaluru line is the need of the hour. And we also need separate railway line between Hassan and Mangalore, the existing one is very lengthy route. We should be able to reach 350 Kms of distance to Mangalore in just 6 Hours.

After BSY, the better choice for the CM post is G. Janardhana Reddy, who will surely complete the balance remaining if any (!!!) in next 22 Months.

For women and Child Development - Renukacharya will be a better one... as one can see lot of developments(!!!)in his tenure.

For Tourism Ministry - Guli Hatti Shekar (independent MLA who supported before) could be a better choice, as his Cabray dance (half naked) in the Assembly during a no confidence motion was highly admiring, and people can really see lot of developments (in dance).

For Home affairs - Bache Gowda is a better choice... firstly he looks like a police, and has proven excellannce in man handling on roads against the people who chase his Government Car is highly admirable!!

For Excerise Ministry - Liquor Baron Vijay Mallya (BJP supported Rajya Sabha MP) could be a best Choice..

For Law, Puttaswamy (current CM's polytrics advisor) could be better, as one can see lot of new law quotings (non existing) in his speech..perhaps the whole state law could see a better change!

Belur Gopalakrishna can be accomodated as surplus, as he always proved to a unstable and completely un satisfied soul..

Readers can suggest bettr jobs to others ... perhaps this will be a handy for the next CM to allocate the proper portfolios!.

YEDDY'S CHOICE FOR THE CM SHOULD BE NOT ACCEPTED AS IT WILL BE AGAIN YEDDY RULING AND NOT GOWDA. THE HIGH COMMAND SHOULD NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN AND LISTEN TO YEDDY. YEDDY HAS NO RIGHT TO TELL THE HIGH COMMAND WHO SHOULD BE THE NEXT CM. THE HIGH COMMAND SHOULD KEEP YEDDY AWAY IN ING THE NEW CM. YEDDY JUST WANTS TO CONTROL THE PARTY AND RULE UNDER GOWDA AS A REMOTE. GADKARI SHOULD CHOOSE ANYONE BUT NOT GOWDA. STILL YEDDY IS PLAYING WITH THE HIGH COMMAND.

Politicians never admit they have done anything wrong.
Until then India won't progress the right way.
But disgusting thing is they justify it openely, blaming others for their corruption.
I appreciate JH Patel- he openely admitted his weaknesses & joked his favourite God is Krishna for his message of Love.
Anna please hasten your Jan Lokpal & limt the tenure of politicians for 2 terms or 65 years-whichever is maximum.
