Mangalore, Aug 4:
The first festival of the Hindu calendar year, Nagara Panchami, was celebrated on the morning of Thursday August 4 with utmost devotion and gaiety. In various Naga temples and moolasthanas different types of worships including 'Naga Thambila' were offered early morning.

Nagara Panchami is one of the most ancient and sacred festivals in this part of the coastal region. The coastal belt and Western Ghats have been a natural habitat for serpents since times unknown.

On Thursday, devotees in large numbers thronged Kudupu Shree Ananthapadmanabha Temple from 4 am onwards and participated in various rituals connected with the festival.

Panchami of Shukla Paksha or the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Shravana month as per the Hindu calendar is the day of Naga Panchami. The period during which the festival falls is known to be an ideal one for the serpents to hatch eggs.

People of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod districts worship the serpent god Subrahmanya. According to legend, the districts were reclaimed by Parashurama from the sea. Hence the serpent is worshipped in honour of original inhabitants.

In the coastal belt, Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk, Kudupu near Mangalore, Kalavar near Kundapur and Manjeshwar in Kasargod district are the famous abodes of the serpent god, where devotees throng in large numbers on Naga Panchami. The temples wore a festive look with flowers adorning them.

On the occasion of Nagara Panchami, the price of flowers shot up. Demand for milk which the devotees offer to the serpent god was also more than usual.

You need to take a class or two in English language before answering subjects you are not familiar with. I said “irrespective of who my neighbours are” and I did not say that I do not know who they are. Read it once again and please do not waste your time and mine. Keep your smartness for yourself. This is not your cup of tea. By the way now, do not say “you said you that do not drink tea”

Who do you think you are to tell me whom to ask and what to ask !! I only said that it would be nice if some had explained things to people like me who really do not know a lot about these customs, irrespective of who my neighbours are. You or the other silly mind reader by the name of Gopal can answer my questions please go ahead and do it. Do not create misunderstanding by assuming things which is narrow mindedness. What statement of mine did you find insulting. Read carefully before you come up with nonsense.

Mr.D'souza, If you are really intereted in knowing about way of worshiping or any other devotion of other relegion you can directly ask any of your neighbours or the leaders of particular religion. I am sure you have more Hindu neighbours than ur own. Don't make fun by asking stupid questions about others faith.

Dear my friends/brothers for god's sake don't tease or insult directly or indirectly other religion, their way of their worship, those have been taught and inherited by their ancestors.Everybody irrespective of their religion believe/worship in their own way they like.Nobody got the right to hurt the feelings/sentiments of any religion.if anybody want to know in curiosity or learn about other religion they can better go the people/scholars who are better versed with and more trained in the field.Try to live harmoniously and don't involve in others business. They are having their own way of life, you are having your own way of life.If possible try to help others in their difficult times rather than criticising others or post unhealthy comments in this column. After all we are all children of one almighty god.Only names, way of worshiping difference from religion to religion.
Wishing all our brothers and sisters a happy Nagarapanchami.Whatever the festivals may be of Hindu,Christians or Muslims ,this is nothing but a infusion of positive energy to our body. That's all.

A vacant plot of abt 10 cents in Mannagudda on way to Barke, remains unsold. A Nagabana is adjacent to that plot and people are reluctant to get the land for fear of the Bana.

    Dear friends,

With no offense to any individual, community or faith, please allow me to express my independent view unrelated to the article.

I belong to a religion, which was founded based on a well scripted Gospel dealing with all aspects of human life without any unscientific beliefs attached. However, no sooner the founder left on heavenly abode, the followers started practicing all sorts of blind beliefs leading to volatile, idol and hero worships of no eternal significance but completely eroding fundamental values of the faith.

The best I can understand about the religion is that there is only one God, who has created all of us with certain specifications initially unknown to the mankind but over the ages man has been trying to unwind through what we call scientific research through which and through consistent democratic reforms all under the blessing of Almighty, man has been able to liberate the mankind from all kinds of evil shackles.

Religious faith is the most unquestioned, undemocratic and unilateral practice in the human life, which carries on from generations to generations without being debated about either the purpose or the result. In the electronic age, one must introspect his own beliefs and practices and try to align himself with the most rational ideology nearly satisfying the mystery of mankind on earth.

It would have been nice if someone had explained what exactly these photographs represent. The importance of cononuts and their juice. What is inside those white bags. What are those blackish looking items on the ground.. and finally why and how snakes are worshiped etc., For us to know who know nothing about.
