Mangalore, Aug 5: Heavy rains continued to batter coastal Karnataka on Thursday August 4. Castle Rock in Uttara Kannada district received highest rain of 18 cms, while the coastal regions received rains between 8 and 17 cms.

All the rivers and rivulets in the coast are flowing to their full capacity. Some low-lying areas faced the threat of artificial floods because of improperly maintained drains.

A house belonging to Geeta Nagesh at Jalligudde Jayanagar collapsed on Wednesday night, inflicting a loss of about two lac rupees on the family. While the family members, who were outside the house at the time, escaped without any harm, things inside the house suffered extensive damages. Two houses located at Padukere within Kota gram panchayat in Udupi district were damaged due to strong winds. A number of other houses in Udupi district also suffered damages. Four students, who were waiting for a bus near Cauvery College Virajpet suffered injuries after the branch of a tree got fell on them. A number of agricultural fields have been inundated.

The meteorological department has predicted rains up to 125 cms during the next two days in coastal Karnataka. It also expects strong winds with a velocity of 45 to 55 cms to blow in the coast during this period, and has as such, warned the fishermen not to undertake fishing activities.

A person named T V Koran (64) from Chernattala in Madikai Bangalam in Kasargod district was washed away in a drain while walking on the footbridge laid across the drain on Wednesday. His body was recovered by the fire brigade in the evening.
