Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 12: A J Hospital and Research Centre, here,  is organizing a thyroid camp from August 16 to August 20 at the hospital premises.

Detecting problems related to hypothyroidism / hyperthyroidism is difficult. This hormone is essential for the effective functioning of all organs. Previously, almost all the patients were of the feeling that surgery is the only solution for thyroid problems. But reality is different. Only few thyroid swellings require surgery.

People with Swelling in the neck (Goiter), constipation, hoarseness of voice, heat intolerance, excessive heart beats, tremors, weight gain, menstrual disorders (increased flow), dry skin, weight loss, excessive sweating, loose motions can make use of this camp.

Hypothyroidism is a common disorder due to the decreased production of thyroid hormones, seen especially in girls/females. Weakness, tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, weight gain in spite of loss of appetite, hair loss, dry skin, hoarseness of voice, menstrual disorders and swelling in the neck are some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. It can be effectively treated by taking a hormone called 'thyroxine'.

Hyperthyroidism is another common disorder, due to increased production of thyroid hormones. Weight loss in spite of increased appetite, heat intolerance, sweating, excessive heart beats, loose motions, tremors, menstrual problems and neck swelling are some of the features. This disease can also be effectively treated by medications.

Goiter or thyroid nodule (neck swelling) is another common problem. By doing thyroid hormone tests and needle aspiration from the swelling (FNAC), cancer arising from the thyroid can be detected.

Hormone related diseases like thyroid disorders, diabetes mellitus, obesity, growth and developmental problems in children, osteoporosis (weakening of bones), menstrual disorders and hair growth over the face and body in girls/women are effectively treated in the Endocrinology Department of A J Hospital.

The department of Endocrinology at A J hospital is first of its kind in the coastal Karnataka. Endocrinology is a unique specialty, dealing with various hormone related disorders, which affect the body as a whole and the symptoms are not specific for a particular organ.

Head - Endocrinology Department Dr Ganesh H K who did his DM in Endocrinology from the reputed K E M Hospital, Mumbai and has been rendering his services at A J Hospital since November 2007 will be available for consultation at the camp.

Camp participants will be offered consultation and T3, T4 & TSH tests at Rs175.
