Beltangady: Demolition of under-construction house by forest officials sparks spat with MLA Poonja

Beltangady, Oct 8: Forest officials in Beltangady have demolished the foundation of a house belonging to a family that has resided in Amminadka, Kalenja village for a century.

Kuddamane Sesa Gowda and his wife had been cultivating rubber on their one-and-a-half-acre land and living there with their five children. Recently, one of their grandchildren began constructing a house with an asbestos sheet roof. However, on October 6, Uppinangady forest officials demolished the construction.

Upon learning of the incident, MLA Harish Poonja arrived at the scene, leading to a heated exchange with the forest officials who claimed the land belonged to the forest department.

MLA Poonja directed local youths to rebuild the foundation immediately, further escalating tensions between the forest officials and the MLA.

MLA Harish Poonja promptly contacted Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, who ordered the forest officials to maintain the status quo given that the family has occupied the land for a century.

As a result, local youths erected a temporary shed and even conducted a housewarming ceremony.

If the house is constructed in the forest zone then forest Dept has a right to take action and MLA should not interfere in the Dept work. Forest dept know to do their duty. And if the same family members harmed by wild animal same commenter will comment against the Dept.

I thought even if you live in Government land for centuries, the ownership of the land is not going to change. MLA should have arranged another piece of land if he was capable for that poor family, if he really had the gut. Encouraging the youths to take the law into hands is not an elected representative should be doing.

Even the forest officials don’t have the right to take law into their hands. How dare they pulled down a constructed structure without serving prior notice and following due procedure? This is how those with power harass the poor and helpless people. Had they done this if the land was encroached by an influential goonda with a political clout?

Which law has been followed by family to build the law. If the land comes under Forest Area then who gave the permission to built the house. MLA Should have checked all the details and taken the right decision instead of supporting them.
