Mangaluru, Oct 9: A first-of-its-kind conservation centre for marine life is under construction at Tannirbhavi here.

The centre is being built at a cost of Rs 17 lac near Tannirbhavi beach. The aim of the centre is to give medical treatment to marine creatures that get injured in sea in and around Mangaluru. Many a times, dolphins, sharks and sea tortoises get injured due to the nets of fishermen or propeller wings of boats.

There is no such centre at present in Karnataka. Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have such centres. Karnataka has a 370-km long coastline. After the approval is given, the project will start functioning.

Two years ago, a marine cell was opened in Karwar. This was also opened with the same intention. Expert staff is required for the centre.

Tannirbhavi conservation centre is in front of Tree Park. As it is bit far, it will be tedious to take huge marine creatures to the spot. If it was built by the side of the beach it would have been better, opine some.

Antony Mariyappa, DCF, Mangaluru forest department says, “Now there is no system to treat marine creatures that get injured. We call experts and give them treatment at sea beach itself. If the centre is built, they can be given better treatment.”

Beach tourism expert Yathish Baikampady said, “Injuries to dolphins does not happen that often. Sea tortoises need protection. Awareness regarding this need to be created. Constructing a rescue centre can be avoided as rescuing dolphins or turtles involves small expenses where public and fisherman get involved. There is a need to sensitize people. Expenses of constructing rescue centres and appointing separate officials can be avoided.”
