Udupi, Nov 22: The first unit of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd’s thermal power plant at Nandikoor near Padubidri began power generation again on Monday November 21. The unit has a capacity of 600 mega watts.

A committee of experts, formed to study the working of the company, had visited the area and received petitions from people affected by the plant on Sunday. The plant had been closed down for annual maintenance for over a month.

Power Company of Karnataka Ltd managing director, Navinchandra, said that UPCL is not barred from restarting generation of power from the plant that had been shut down for annual maintenance. He said that at the same time, it is liable to comply with the standards set by Karnataka Pollution Control Board.

Secretary of Nandikoor Janajagruti Samiti, Jayant Kumar, in the meanwhile, had claimed that the pollution board’s chief, Sadashivaiah, had told him that UPCL cannot start generating power from its first unit without implementing all the conditions imposed by the board.
