Crackdown on misuse of painkillers in Karnataka – 10 pharmacies shut down

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 11: With the increasing misuse of painkillers as narcotics among addicts, the state drug control department has intensified real-time monitoring of the purchase and sale of these medications. The department has shut down 10 pharmacies out of the 470 outlets they inspected.

The drug control department has been keeping a close watch on the sale of painkillers for the past month. Painkillers are now being dispensed only with a doctor's prescription. Although there was already a rule prohibiting the sale of medications without a prescription, many pharmacies were found violating this regulation. In response, the Karnataka drug control department has introduced a special link on its homepage, requiring pharmacy owners to update the sale and purchase records of painkillers daily.

The department conducts raids on pharmacies showing unusually high sales and inspects the outlets. So far, 470 pharmacies have been raided. While action has been taken against 73 of them, 10 have been shut down, and their permits have been revoked.

Dr Umesh S, drugs controller of the Karnataka Drug Control Department, stated, “We received several complaints from the police department and have strictly instructed all pharmacies not to sell painkiller tablets without a prescription. We are closely monitoring their purchase and sale.”

Ramesh, a retired officer from the drug control department, remarked, “Earlier, addicts preferred Tramadol tablets, followed by Diclofenac. Now, Tempetedol tablets are in high demand among addicts. When one tablet is controlled, they switch to similar tablets from other manufacturers. The Union government must implement stricter regulations.”

Ravish R, a drug control officer, noted, “A patient might have purchased 100 painkiller tablets within a month. When sales increase, the department monitors the situation. By tracking sales details, locations, and outlets, more than 50% of the unauthorized use of painkillers has been curbed.”

Karnataka has a total of 53,000 pharmacies, with a significant 25,600 located in Bengaluru.

If medicines are being advertised, the harmful effects of overuse of pain medications must also be educated. Its not only the narcotic use which is a problem, but patients have a low tolerance for pain and will pop a pill without realising how it will affect them in the long run. Sometimes aches and pains are a symptom to tell us that we need to investigate further and by popping a pill to control the symptom and this could lead to the the health dysfunction to become worse. Pharmacies need to stop giving over the counter medicines as they do not even know the history of the patient. One of my friends who had a certain allergy to a certain ingredient used in medicines went into anaphylactic shock ( severe over reaction that leads to breathlessness and death ) and she ONLY HAD COLD. I also lost my aunt who was a diabetic who did not take care and was always had high sugar and cholestrol and when she was not able to function and had aches and pains would keep on taking low dose painkillers which doctors prescribed saying it is the lowest dose and nothing will happen and she died of kidney failure within just 5 days of having fever and iuncontrollable pain in her stomach to realise her kidneys were completely gone due to taking too many painkillers. These are someof the reasons why my family has shifted to Homeopathy and take Allopathy very rarely. But if Allopathic medicines are taken responsibly then it is not so bad. So regulatory bodies should also look into these aspects and ensure that drug abusers are not only for narcotic use but also by the common man.

This is a good work from the Congress government headed by Honourable Chief Minister Sidda-rama-iah. Another one most important thing required is to crack down on the packed spices powders, all food supplied by the hotels, caterers and all Street Foods. This must be checked periodically. The cancer has been increased due to mixing of chemicals to incret taste of the food

In Gulf countries, there is strict control over medicines; without a prescription, they don’t give medicines. Here, painkillers and abortion tablets are available openly, and more than half of the medicines here are duplicates.

Prabhuji,Mangalore who should and where can be controlled? Difficult. Give you a example. My own brother was taking a sleeping tablets, once at night. we were living in Belman. With time he used to go Pharmacy and bring tablets with same receipt each time he goes to shopping. I didnt think much about it. With time he collected a lot ,and as he died ,came to know he was taking more tablets than only one because dosage was less for him with time., same time he used to take some other tablets for convulsions. All in all he used to take without our knowleldge more. Mother was old, sick, never knew. Pharmacist used to give tablets as he asked. I was here. None knew this. This might happen to many at home in mangalore.
