Pooja Chopra reminisces about childhood Holi mischief and traditions

Mumbai, Mar 12: As Holi draws near, actress Pooja Chopra takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling the joy, mischief, and traditions that made the festival special during her childhood. From sneaky water balloon attacks to relishing her favorite festive treats, Holi has always held a cherished place in her heart.

Reflecting on her school days, Pooja shared how she would secretly carry water balloons in her bag to tuition classes. "One of the craziest things I did on Holi—or rather, the day before—was sneaking in water balloons. I’d sit through class pretending everything was normal, but the moment we stepped outside, I’d unleash my surprise attack on my friends. They’d go home drenched and return the next day, ready for revenge," she laughed.

She also recalled the ritual of applying baby oil from head to toe before heading out to play with colors. "Every strand of hair, every crease of my ears, my earlobes, nail beds—even my elbows were covered in oil! Back then, it was a necessity to avoid stubborn stains. Thankfully, today, people mostly use gulal and organic colors, so I just apply a thick moisturizer before stepping out," she added.

Beyond the fun and games, Holi for Pooja was also about indulgence in festive delicacies. "My absolute favorite is Puran Puri with ghee. After playing Holi, my nani would make it for me—thick, stuffed, almost like a Puran Paratha rather than a Puran Puri, but absolutely delicious. Nothing beats the taste of a hot puran paratha with ghee," she reminisced.

Holika Dahan, the symbolic bonfire ritual held on the eve of Holi, remains a deeply cherished tradition for Pooja. "Since childhood, it’s been about gathering for the puja, circling the bonfire, offering prayers, and receiving prasad. As kids, the most exciting part was sneaking away right after to play with water! Even today, the essence remains the same—it’s a time for reflection, prayers, and reconnecting with the community while sharing sweets," she said.

Pooja Chopra, crowned Femina Miss India World in 2009, rose to fame with Commando: A One Man Army and has since featured in films like Fashion and Heroine. Despite her busy schedule, Holi continues to be a festival that brings her back to her roots, filled with laughter, nostalgia, and togetherness.
