NUINS organises national EDP on ‘Innovative pedagogies for higher education’

Mangaluru, Mar 15: The Nursing Education Unit (NEU) of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (NUINS) successfully hosted a national level Educational Development Programme (EDP) titled ‘Transforming learning: innovative pedagogies for the future of higher education’ on March 6-7. The event saw active participation from 62 delegates representing ten institutions from various disciplines.

The event commenced with an inaugural ceremony graced by chief guest Prof Dr Srinikethan, director of technical research, Nitte Deemed to be University, Mangaluru. Prof Dr Nagesh Prabhu, director of curriculum development, presided over the function, while organizing chairperson and principal of NUINS, Prof Dr Fatima D’Silva, was also present.

The two-day event focused on emerging pedagogical strategies to enhance the teaching-learning process in higher education. Key topics discussed included:

• Research-based approaches for effective learning outcomes

• Quality benchmarks & evolving paradigms in higher education

• Integration of innovative teaching-learning methods & evaluation techniques

• Small and large group teaching strategies

• Workplace assessment & scenario development

• Simulation in education, e-logbooks, and portfolio-based learning

A special symposium explored cutting-edge teaching methodologies such as reflective practice, self-directed learning, and the flipped classroom model.

The sessions were led by renowned experts, including:

Prof Vidya Shetty, Prof Dr Flosy D’Souza, Prof Dr Munir Ahmed, Prof Dr Suraj Shetty, Dr Praveen M Pawar, Dr Dinker Pai, Dr Ankeeta Menona Jacob, Prof Dr Caren D’Souza, Prof Dr Kishan Prasad, Prof Dr Sukanya Shetty, Prof Dr Jacintha Veigas, Prof Sujatha R, Fr Anil Ivan Fernandes, Prof Dr Smitha Hegde, Dr Raghavendra Holla, Prof Dr Suraj Shetty, and Dr Manjeshwar Shrinath Pai.

The EDP also featured engaging competitions for faculty and students:

• Faculty competition: ‘A pathfinder for educational excellence’, with nine groups participating.

o Winners: Priya & Ann Barnes (Kanachur Nursing College)

o Runners-up: Dr Suchithra & Sudhakar (NUINS)

• Student e-poster competition: ‘Creating a conducive learning environment’

o Winning team: Lahari & Prasad (postgraduate students, masters in public health, Nitte DU)

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Basavaraj, joint organizing secretary. Vicky Priya Fernandes, organizing committee member, efficiently compered the event.

The participants highly appreciated the well-structured sessions, expert insights, and the warm hospitality of the organizing team. The EDP successfully reinforced the importance of innovation in higher education, equipping educators with practical strategies to enhance learning outcomes.
