Abu Dhabi, May 16: Former US President Donald Trump was accorded a grand and culturally rich welcome as he landed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday — the final stop in his Middle East tour after visiting Qatar.
Trump, who was received by UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the majestic Qasr Al Watan — the nation’s Presidential Palace — was treated to a unique traditional performance that has since taken social media by storm.
A video posted by White House aide Margo Martin on platform X (formerly Twitter) showcased the moment when Trump was led through a formation of performers participating in the traditional Al-Ayyala — a heritage dance native to the UAE and Oman. The eye-catching part of the ceremony was a line of women performing a choreographed hair-flipping routine, dramatically swaying their long tresses from side to side in synchrony with rhythmic drumming and chants.
The expressionless gaze of Trump, watching the captivating display of cultural pride, stood in contrast to the energy of the dancers. Alongside the women, several men took part in the ceremony, brandishing symbolic sword-like objects — a common element in traditional Gulf performances symbolizing honour and bravery.
"The welcome ceremony in UAE continues!" wrote Margo Martin, capturing the grandeur of the moment.
The Al-Ayyala, often performed during national events and state visits, is a symbolic portrayal of unity, victory, and tribal tradition, often involving poetry, sword play, and synchronized movements — including the striking hair-tossing segment, which has now grabbed global attention.
Trump’s visit to the UAE is seen as part of continued diplomatic engagements in the region. However, it’s the cultural showcase that has left netizens fascinated, with the video drawing thousands of reactions and shares within hours.
As Trump prepares to conclude his Middle East tour, the UAE’s vibrant and spirited welcome has added a touch of tradition, art, and symbolism — leaving a strong impression both offline and online.
