Jerusalem, Jun 1: In a significant development in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed that a precision airstrike on May 13 beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza, resulted in the death of 28 Palestinians, including top Hamas commander Muhammad Sinwar and operative Mohammad Sabaneh.
According to the IDF, the strike targeted a ‘command-and-control compound’ hidden in an underground tunnel complex beneath the hospital, which they claim was used by Hamas for military operations. A newly released 3D simulation and drone footage showed the alleged tunnel infrastructure extending under the hospital.
"The operation was jointly conducted by the IDF and the Israel Securities Authority (ISA), using advanced intelligence, aerial surveillance, and precision-guided munitions," the IDF stated. The military emphasized that the hospital's functionality was not impacted, and that all efforts were made to avoid civilian harm.
The Israeli military accused Hamas of cynically using hospitals for terror activities, calling the tactic a "cruel exploitation" of Gaza’s civilian population.
On May 28, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the Knesset, officially announced Sinwar’s killing. “We eliminated Muhammad Sinwar,” he declared, adding that other senior Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed Deif, and Yahya Sinwar, had also been neutralized.
Muhammad Sinwar, younger brother of Yahya Sinwar—the architect of the October 2023 attacks on Israel—was considered a key operational figure in Hamas. Yahya Sinwar was killed during an Israeli military operation last October, with drone footage showing his final moments amid rubble.
While Hamas has not confirmed Muhammad Sinwar’s death, nor released any statement or funeral details, Israeli forces maintain their commitment to dismantling what they term “terror infrastructure” in Gaza to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians.
