Mangalore, Jan 28: The newly formed commissionerate here completed two years of existence on January 26. Its new office is set to be inaugurated on Saturday January 28. However, the commissionerate is yet to be strengthened to its potential.

This commissionerate, which covers a population of about 11 lac, was headed by the then inspector general of police, Gopal Hosur, when it began functioning on January 26, 2010. Seemant Kumar Singh took over charge as the full time commissioner. Now, the police auditorium has been converted into a full-fledged office of the commissionerate. The office, set up in an area of 22,000 square feet, has come up at a cost of five crore rupees approximately.  It is learnt that the commissioner has not yet been vested with full powers of a magistrate including clamping of restrictions under section 144.

The commissionerate is yet to get its plans on upgradation of police stations, appointment of inspectors and other staff to several police stations realized. At present, it faces a staff shortage of 272. 

A renovated police control room has started functioning here, which controls police control room vehicles to which global positioning systems have been fitted. Facility has been provided to directly view happenings through 30 closed circuit television cameras fitted at different places across the city from the control room.

The commissionerate has got administrative sanction for opening new police stations at Jappinamogeru, Gurpur Kaikamba, traffic north station in Suratkal, and traffic south in Ullal.
